“We just returned from our small group Japan Discovered adventure, and we had a fabulous time! Madoka (Maddy) was our tour leader, and she was amazing – very organized, very clear about what we were doing for the day or the next day, and very specific on when and where we needed to gather in order to move to the next activity. We travelled with 5 other couples who we did not know before the trip. Although we all had different backgrounds, we were all of similar age and got along marvelously, which added to our trip enjoyment. Our trip required some adjustments as a result of the G7 summit occurring in Hiroshima, but we still hit most of the activities described in the brochure. We really enjoyed the “Discovered” part of the tour. It seems our visits to Kanazawa, Gokayama, Takayama, Yudanaka, and Hakone were somewhat off the beaten path and gave us exposure to sites that most people don’t get to see. We really appreciated those experiences. The entire trip was quite well organized and thought out, including the communication we received from the office before the trip. All of the hotels and group-meal restaurants we went to were great and met or exceeded our expectations. The meals that were part of the tour package were top notch and exposed us to diverse Japanese cuisine. However, some of the hotels were a little out of the action. We would have preferred to have hotels located in areas or neighborhoods with a lot of restaurants or bars close by so we had a few more options for the free evenings. Generally that happened, but our hotels in Kyoto, the final days in Tokyo, and Takayama were not ideal in this regard. My understanding is that hotels in each city can vary depending on availability. Although Maddy our tour leader was fantastic, some of our local guides were less so. I’d say generally, their knowledge was fine, but their lack of English language skills among some made it difficult to understand or to get them to understand questions we were asking. I think many members of our group were a little frustrated by this. Again, my understanding is that local guides could be different depending on their availability. One heads up for anyone going on this tour (or any tour for that matter). We had one free day in Kyoto and one free day in Tokyo. We really weren’t thinking about this until the day before, and as a result, we were scrambling to come up with a plan for our free day (especially in Kyoto which was our first free day). I suggest you have a plan or make tour arrangements for your free day well in advance. That way you won’t be scrambling at the last minute like we were! We would definitely recommend this trip for anyone with similar interests.”

“We were on one of the first tours to enter Japan after their reopening in October, 2022. Our tour was 'Ancient Trails of Japan' which we were attracted to because it promised lots of walking and hiking and a unique cultural experience. We were not disappointed. We logged 8+ miles around Tokyo on our first day! The hikes on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route were amazing! A certain level of fitness is required here as some of these trails are steep, but the views are well worth the effort. The hike between Magome and Tsumago on the Nakasendo trail was less strenuous, but still rewarding with beautiful mountain views and historically preserved towns. This was our first trip to Japan and we feel like we got a great introductory experience with a good mixture of city sights and immersion in nature and Japanese cultural history. Our guides were all extremely professional and were willing to go the extra mile to make sure we got a good experience. Our thanks to: Toshi, our tour director who was with us for the whole trip and made sure everything went smoothly; Sue, our guide for a wonderful day in Tokyo; Yoko, who guided us through an equally stunning day in Kyoto; Kazumi and Waka, our guides on the Kumano Kodo; and Uki, our guide on the Nakasendo. All of these beautiful, helpful, and knowledgeable people helped make our trip a most memorable one. I would recommend Unique Japan Tours to anyone interested in a cultural experience that will resonate for years. They are a professional and well-run organization and their people on the ground in Japan are some of the best in the business.”

“We undertook a self guided tour of Japan with Unique Japan Tours. It was amazing. We gave them information regarding our standard hotel type as well as places we wanted to visit and some activities we would like to undertake. Everything we wanted to do was included. Everything happened exactly as it was planned and yet we had an amazing amount of freedom to do whatever we wanted, whether it was to visit the deer at Nara or the Snow Monkeys in Yamanouchi. The whole experience was so unique that it's really difficult to pick the best part. High on that list would be the Ryokan experience in all settings, Myojima island, Nara, Kyoto, walking on the Samurai trail and of course, Tokyo. We have been to many amazing places, but Japan is top of the list for a revisit if we get a chance.”

“Oomi did an excellent job of organising and executing our perfect honeymoon trip to Japan. We explained when and where we wanted to go and they quickly arranged a full plan and breakdown of costs and tweaked it to our budget when we asked. The app & pre departure guide was such an excellent tool and we used it throughout our trip. Oomi was on hand throughout the trip with the emergency number which was very reassuring. All the activities planned and tour guides they chose were excellent and it really helped us make the most of our time in Japan. They even left a small gift for us at our final hotel which was so thoughtful & kind. I would 100% recommend Oomi to anyone wanting to visit Japan.”

“What an incredible itinerary. We definitely covered a lot of what Japan has to offer: from the culture, history, beauty, wildlife, cuisine, and festivals to the modern urban bustle. The hotels were terrific, and for the most part, well located. The dinners were fabulous examples of Japanese cuisine. The only criticism I would have is that, they possibly tried to cram TOO MUCH into each day’s activities! I think maybe cutting out one venue on the multiples would have been better to just relax and spend a bit more time at each place. Like just a couple of hours to explore on your own, instead of rushing off to the next site. For instance would have loved to spend more time in Hakone shops (and probably more of a personal preference, but less at the Open Air Art Museum). And instead of racing through the Tsukiji Outer Market, let us go on our own afterwards. Your team should be especially proud of Maddy! She was fantastic and made our trip the best ever. Maddy expertly guided our group through every phase of our journey. She thoroughly provided us with local knowledge and general Japanese customs and expected behaviours, so as to not offend locals or embarrass ourselves. All the while, exhibiting an effervescent and friendly personality. Maddy most certainly went above and beyond. If there is any grade higher than A+, then Maddy definitely deserves such an outstanding ranking!”

One of the main benefits of doing a bespoke trip is to allow for flexibility on your trip. You can adjust the itinerary yourselves if you wish. If this was not clear to you we can only but apologise for that. Perhaps a cultural difference too as Japanese people like to do things 100% accurately. “Unique Japan Tours did a DYNAMITE job with our trip to Japan, October 2022. First, they negotiated the fluid restrictions imposed by Japan government to allow tourists to visit, and us to see our daughter studying in Tokyo. Second, we were completely prepared at every juncture of our trip from arrival to departure, airport pickups, trains, hotels, baggage checks, personalized guides and right down to the correct bus/bus stop and bus queue in Hakone. They tailored the trip to suit our requirements and found us some gorgeous places to stay which I very much doubt we could have found by ourselves! Everyday we were also provided with a very detailed itinerary with suggestions on places to try and step by step guidance on how to get there. It was brilliant!”

“Our first trip to Japan was with Unique Japan in Nov/Dec 2018. We did the Japan Discovered tour which we enjoyed immensely. It was a really great "reconnaisance" trip which gave us an amazing flavour of Japan and an opportunity to visit the "must see" cities and towns. While it would have been preferable to have had more time in Takayama and Kanazawa which we particularly enjoyed, the time we did spend there was sufficient to convince us that we need to revisit. Similarly, we were not able to do justice to Hiroshima, Kyoto or Tokyo and those cities also necessitate subsequent visits. Our highlights were many but included Takayama (a beautiful town with its shrine, morning market by the river and float museum), the Snow Monkey Park at Yudanaka and the Kenrokeun Garden in Kanazawa. We loved the ryokans especially the one at Yudanaka which was absolutely stunning - a great choice! The autumn colours were spectacular and we were really impressed by the Japanese people, their culture and way of life. Their refinement, politeness, courtesy and efficiency is something we could all learn from. The food is amazing and the Shinkansens - wow!! There were only 5 of us on the tour so we didn't have a tour leader but Carmel, who was a trainee with your company at that time and also on her first trip to Japan did a wonderful job managing us "oldies" and was a resourceful, gracious and engaging companion. All the local guides on our tour were great, especially "Sue" (Tsugo) who guided us in Tokyo and then in Hakone and was extremely knowledgeable, insightful and spoke excellent English. We would not hesitate to use Unique Japan Tours for any future trips to Japan. Val Swaine and Mike Harrington”

Dear Janet, Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your tour. Gardens and Galleries is a wonderful tour that has made many people appreciate the magnificent gardens of Japan and the landscape around it so much more. It was very unfortunate that a typhoon hit while you were visiting Kyoto back in 2018. I recall the shinkansen had stopped so our emergency team stepped in to get you safely to Matsue as best they could. This particular tour had less than 6 people on it so we were relying heavily on our local guides and assistants, rather than a full time tour leader. If you had a tour leader, the feeling of 'being left on your own' would have been avoided. However as safety is our number one concern, especially during a typhoon or any natural disaster, our team have to react quickly to these situations. I don't believe you were left to 'work things out' yourself. Our Emergency team were working around the clock to ensure all our guests were safe during this time. I apologise if the communication was not satisfactory. We learnt a lot from this experience and I can assure you improvements were made as a result of that particular tour feedback. Once again, thank you for submitting your review. It is disheartening to think the efforts made behind the scenes went unnoticed. But as mentioned, improvements were made to ensure the emergency team are better informed and equipped. Many thanks again, Darina

“The cherry blossoms were in perfect bloom throughout our trip and we really enjoyed the atmosphere of Sakura. We visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima Island. We met a beautiful lady in Tokyo as arranged, she was a perfect guide in Tokyo. She really helped us get a feel for Tokyo and Japan and was a pleasure to spend time with. We found your itinerary, tips, maps and guide book invaluable. We loved every aspect of the trip and really glad we got to experience so much of Japan, we will have to go back to see all the rest! Everywhere we looked, we saw something beautiful. It was one of the most memorable trips we have ever been on and we wish to thank you sincerely for all your help and guidance.
