I really loved Ushuaia as a city but the hotel we stayed at with Chimu was sub-par. The rooms were comfortable enough but it was very far from town (not easily walkable) and the restaurant served very mediocre food for ridiculous prices. I would have preferred staying somewhere closer to town.

A fabulous must see part of the world. Patagonia is awe inspiring. People and culture and food........wildlife, nature.......and historic content. One trip is not enough.

Torres del Paine Ecocamp, Buenas Aires, and Rapa Nui were stand-out destinations for us.

As I only went to Argentina for the sole purpose of going to Antarticia, it was a place to recover from the flight to and from Australia. What I saw and did I certainly enjoyed.

Apart from my Antarctic and Galapagos trips ( the latter also amazing), I spent about 7 weeks backpacking and bussing northwards from Ushuaia through Chile and some of Argentina, staying in hostals and experiencing as much of the local culture, countryside and people as possible - watching, talking and listening and looking. I left Australia knowing very little of Sth America with a vague understanding of the history and politics. I feel now I have a much better understanding of the indigenous peoples, the invasion by the Europeans and the ongoing exploitation, on many levels, that is occurring there. The majority of people are hardworking, stoic and mostly positive in their existence to improve their lives. South of Pedro Montt is like an emerging frontier of Chile (where the remaining indigenous peoples remain unacknowledged) with exciting mountains, lagos, birds and guanocos, and rivers. I did not venture north of Santiago. In my opinion, Santiago is just another city. Valparaiso is energetic, alive, edgy and exciting - a great city to finish my first visit to Sth America, but not my last.
