Absolutely loved this course! Jonathan really gets to the heart of portrait painting, and he answered questions I didn't know I had - brilliant learning experience!

Jonathan's drivel is desperate and not especially intuitive at all.

Engaging and thought provoking. The process of painting in all its aspects. Not a how-to, this is how to paint, here is a demonstration but practical information you might not find elsewhere or have thought about. Much more interesting than I thought it would have been and of the 3 courses I have done, I think this is the best one so far. Happy to recommend.

Doesn't do a great job of presenting technical skills in a coherent fashion. Learning points take a long time to come out. It would have been useful to present basic colour theory, more on how to actually draw the facial features/measure your reference, where to use warm and cool tones. Videos are really long and mostly artist talking into the camera, needs more demonstration and actionable advice. His work is really cool, but this course so far has not been a lot of learning for time invested. His main take away seems to be "just try things out" and "not knowing artist rules allowed me to be uniquely creative" which is great, but also not very helpful when you're trying to learn. Overall needs to be more succint, better visuals to re-enforce concepts presented, better organized. More demonstration that the student can follow along and try for themselves would be really useful.

Unlike most artist, Jonathan articulates his process very well.

Total waste of time and money listening to someone talking for eight hours and saying nothing. Not what I expected. I thought there would be practical demonstrations

I found this an amazing course - very unusually, Jonathan - I thought - focused more and first on the spirit behind doing a portrait, and then the helpful methods of achieving that (eg. lighting) rather than telling you how you should paint a portrait. You see his portrait develop as he gets to know his sitter - evident in a first impression portrait and a later one which has depth and shows more of the spirit of the sitter, rather than a snapshot in time. So I thought it was great and really helpful (there are lots of practical tips too).
