When I was a GP I handed out advice from Colin Espie our local Sleep Expert in Glasgow, and much of Stephanie’s advice was along the same lines. I’ve reinforced my time of rising, increased the light and my exercise first thing. I’ve also stopped clock-watching through the night. I’ve only once had to follow the advice to get out of bed and read, instead of lying awake. That’s something I knew, but didn’t do in case of disturbing others!

This is a poorly structured course on a subject essential for modern life. It is in serious need of a revision, both in structure and in discourse. Problems with it: - Too long; the introduction is too long, each lesson is too long. The whole course can be compressed to 30% or less. - There is too much focus on how "bad" the current situation is. Each lesson or even larger piece of information starts with how you, the listener, misunderstand, misplace, misread the reality or how badly you currently behave. I don't know how many times I had to listen to "... but in reality ...". It's like we are all seeing or believing something, "but in reality" what we see or believe is completely wrong. What's worse, these "negative" introductions are very long, to the point that the exposition loses momentum before the useful information is being put forth. - Personifications that have no place in a serious discourse. Asking the listener to imagine "a gremlin" which allegedly is not letting the poor insomniac sleep is too much. The audience is formed of adults; tell me what to do so that I can sleep, don't treat me like a child and don't invite me to self-deceive myself. - Addressing non-existent problems (for part of the audience, at least). Too much emphasis on "panic" (I am not panicking, I just want to have a good quality sleep), too many mentions on "anxiety" (if I have this much anxiety, I don't need BBC Maestro, I need a shrink), too numerous "but I promise you" (you don't have to promise, I believe you, that's why I follow your course on BBC Maestro). The good parts of the course (and that's why I will recommend it, with caveats): - The topic is really important. Despite all other chaff in the course, there is also really useful grain in it - The course comes with notes and those notes are better structured than the spoken material. The useful information appears nicely and it is easy to follow, understand, and retain - The course notes come with a 2-week plan - The best part is: it dispels some myths regarding sleep. It puts order and empowers the listener that he/she CAN control their sleep patterns - and if they can't, then they need medical help My advice regarding this course: re-do it. Shorten it. Start with the plan and build from there. Finally, don't use metaphors or personifications that are in dissonance with a simple, effective, empowering, and inspiring message. After all, if I get something from this course, it's that sleep management is much simpler than it may seem. I don't see why this course has to be this complicated.

A wonderful course delivered in a compassionate and realistic manner. Thank you, Stephanie, for acknowledging we’re all only human and that sleep can be easier or more difficult to come by in different phases of our lives. Lots of useful, practical tips which I’ll be doing my best to put into practice.
