“To me, teaching someone how to write is a difficult task. Yet after 4.5 hours with Isabel Allende, I gained the confidence to start my first novel. My instincts told me to pick her course over the other writer choices and I’m glad I did. This course is intense and intimate, just you and Isabel in her living room. She addresses all aspects of the writing process with eloquence and is a goldmine of valuable information, all delivered with motherly warmth. With her thirst for the story (every one is a “pack of lies” she laughs) and how to tell it, she demystifies the writing process from beginning to end. She is an inspiring mentor for all writers who have their stories still trapped within and don’t know how to start telling it. With over 40 years of writing experience, Allende is a masterful pick to get you started in any genre. She peppers the course with anecdotes, examples and personal stories. I haven’t read any of her books, but now I am curious to. Which is worse—to write your novel and not get published (or perhaps maybe you will) or to die with your story inside you? Allende will inspire you to just start—and that is the hardest part.”

“I love her work, and her course is inspiring. One small niggle, though, is that she makes a sweeping generalisation about girls and boys, starting with reading fantasy, the girls (she claims) moving away from it as they get older, and the boys staying with it and even (God forbid!) moving on to science fiction, too. This is clearly not the case. Also, fantasy and science fiction are not necessarily formulaic, though works are, to be fair, because many wonderful writers and novels completely breaking any perceived mould or formula. Other than these small carps, a great course.”
