In 1795 Thomas Jaques took on his 15-year-old son, John as an apprentice. Together they established ‘Thomas Jaques: Manufacturer of Ivory, Hardwoods, Bone and Tunbridge Ware’ in Hatton Garden. “Just started playing chess again and my wife has started to learn it for the first time. Was looking for a decent set for a reasonable price good enough to be a pleasure to use whilst not representing a big price given that we may not play long term. This set fits the bill very nicely. The size is just right not so small to make it fiddly to move the pieces and also enables you to have a clear view on the position. Quality is excellent given the prove tag of only 30. Seller was excellent to deal with and Id certainly return to this seller for future purchases. Hope this helps someone else.”

“Bought for grandchildren who are in school chess club. Good starter set, although they can all beat me already. Small part of board veneer lifting already when I received the set. Too much hassle to return for small defect but disappointing. On the whole fairly good value for money.”

“Lovely product and in the main its really well made! Disappointed by the QC however as there is a scratch on the board but my 8yo loves it even with that and wouldnt let me return. Otherwise great!”
