What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? PE and maths (measuring jumps, hopping). Oral language - generating ideas for world records. Writing - we wrote about our experiences.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Create more physical challenges and then measure the results. We only did 6 challenges but there was a substantial amount of work around that. I am looking forward to fitting in more challenges during the year.
How many DIY World Records did your class make?
How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? We used the tape measure to measure the length of our jumps and compared the measurements to show which jump was the longest. We discussed the different units we could measure length in (mm, cm, m). We used the sand timers to time some of our records.

Thank you for a great kit to use with the children. They were so excited to be competing for their own world records and we got lots of measurement and vocabulary in as well. The children also had the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility (referee, timekeeper, videographer (we filmed all of our challenges and shared the result with whānau on Seesaw).

The students loved the kit although at times I found that it was quite complicated to understand. It was also quite difficult to think of different ideas.

What a fantastic way to the end the Term. We did this kit during our Year 3 and 4 camp. This was a fun way to set up students challenges. All students took part and were very competitive.

This was a beautifully presented and packaged kit. The teacher material was informative and easy to adapt as needed. We had some interruptions with the Nelson floods but we incorporated our DIY attempts day into our Daily 3 maths programme over the course of a few weeks as the Maths through your feet part of our morning. Students learnt heaps about measuring accurately and being able to repeat their task. We loved the learning through play aspects of this kit. Our students became immersed in their roles and as teachers we loved the integrated nature of the kit.

Feedback from a year 5 student: I think doing the world record challenges the other kids designed made it more interesting and it also made you feel closer to your classmates. It was one of the few times where you can be crazy and creative at the same time. It’s also about teamwork which is part of learning.

My class loved the opportunity to come up with their own world records, but some suggestions got a little too crazy to actually implement. A really good opportunity for cross curricular learning and some very physical sessions breaking the records. The recourses sent out were very useful and the badges were coveted by the kids!
