The tamariki in our class enjoyed learning about turtles and the impact rubbish can have on their environment. Picking up rubbish around our kura was an eye-opening experience, as they began to notice how much of it came from lunch boxes. Learning where this rubbish can end up helped deepen their understanding and made the activity meaningful and engaging for them.

This was an incredible kit and my class was engaged all the way through. They loved being called upon to be protectors of the environment and I was worried that there would be a lot of complaints when we did the actual clean up around the school. Instead they were so enthusiastic and there were so many smiles and requests to go into other places to pick up rubbish. We even enlisted our Year 5 buddy class to join and they went straight into it. Having a turtle to track with the daily texts was also so engaging and the kids kept requesting to track Davis (our turtle) later on and we kept checking in on him for the rest of the year.

This kit includes gloves for the children, rubbish bags and a few posters to complete. My students enjoyed using the gloves to clean up our school. They also loved tracking the turtles. I would have appreciated some photos , posters or pictures of turtles to have used to decorate the classroom and refer to.

The Diary of a Turtle School Kit is a great classroom resource that helps students learn about caring for the environment while building literacy and working together. It works especially well for hands-on projects where children can see how their learning connects to the real world. The support materials and teacher connections also make it easy to use in the classroom.

We shared this kit to the whole class. Majority of the kit was done by my collegue due to a change of plan for our transfer task. This was handy for her as it fits in her goal to expose the children to water conservation and protecting the sea life. The children enjoyed being litter warriors collecting rubbish around the school.

This pack worked well with our study on sustainability. Tracking a turtle and receiving messages about it made caring for oceans engaging and relevant for my year 1 and 2's.
