I am a Year 5/6 teacher, and we had a great time making this recipe! However, I found that the chemistry lesson was a bit too advanced for my students. They had trouble replacing some of the items, so I had to offer them quite a bit of guidance. Additionally, the voucher we had wasn't enough to provide each child with the necessary ingredients. Therefore, I had to outsource the rest of the ingredients. Nevertheless, it was a fun experience for the kids as they enjoy hands-on learning, especially when they get to eat the result later. Thank you Ms Ponciano

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? The students took home a copy of the recipes to make in the holidays.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Takeaways too often and processed foods.
The special needs students learned so much. They made up the basic recipe as a control which made four muffins. They were in groups of three with a teacher aide assigned to each group. They then made muffins with tinned vegetables in them and the next day made muffins with fruit in them. Looking at the reviews they liked the vegetable ones the best. When making the fruit muffins the fruit was chosen to replace the sugar and the students said they lacked flavour. We didn't see that coming! Having small groups all the students were able to use the digital scales stopping at the number 60g. Blitzing the vegetables and fruit was such a great idea. This kept the recipe simple to make.

Like the heading says Make vegetable cake - who knew that you could add so many different vegetables to make cake? When I first read this I didn't think the cakes would be that appetising to eat, like a small child sitting at the kitchen table I must admit I screwed my nose up at the thought. However, that's why I teach year 7-8 children their braver than me! They took the challenge on without a blink of an eye.
