What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Takeaways too often and processed foods.
The special needs students learned so much. They made up the basic recipe as a control which made four muffins. They were in groups of three with a teacher aide assigned to each group. They then made muffins with tinned vegetables in them and the next day made muffins with fruit in them. Looking at the reviews they liked the vegetable ones the best. When making the fruit muffins the fruit was chosen to replace the sugar and the students said they lacked flavour. We didn't see that coming! Having small groups all the students were able to use the digital scales stopping at the number 60g. Blitzing the vegetables and fruit was such a great idea. This kept the recipe simple to make.

Like the heading says Make vegetable cake - who knew that you could add so many different vegetables to make cake? When I first read this I didn't think the cakes would be that appetising to eat, like a small child sitting at the kitchen table I must admit I screwed my nose up at the thought. However, that's why I teach year 7-8 children their braver than me! They took the challenge on without a blink of an eye.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Most kids said 'this is better than I was expecting'. They also said they'd had a lot of fun.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The accompanying resources (paper worksheets etc) were good, but I will adapt them for next time to save paper. I did find the teacher guide a bit overwhelming at first and wasn't sure where to start. It was quite broad and I was expecting more step by step lesson plans which would have been helpful when creating a plan that would last a few weeks.. But like anything, once I got my head around the content and lesson objectives, I found it had a lot of really helpful information and links.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? That you can substitute ingredients to suit the needs of others (the stakeholder).
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom? Really good - the kids already knew about reducing sugar and this was a practical application of this knowledge.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? The knowledge and confidence to change ingredients to cook healthier food.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Gives the students confidence to try new things and use healthier alternatives successfully when cooking in future.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? This group of students would generally have very healthy diets with good quality ingredients at home.
I did this for Year 8 Food Tech as an example of technological knowledge (formation, manipulation and transformation of ingredients). After reading other teacher's feedback about this school kit, I was a bit worried about how these kids would respond as this particular group can be very fussy eaters. However, I was pleasantly surprised as they really enjoyed experimenting and eating their cakes. They were motivated to keep creating new recipes and could've kept going if we had time.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Most don't have many, if any. For a minority, it would be the cost, the inconvenience or the lack of education around healthy eating.
I was a bit overwhelmed with the complexity of this kit and it took a lot of organising and processing before implementation with my class, but it was a very rich learning experience.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I didn't know that some of the ingredients in a cake could be substituted eg. banana for an egg. It's amazing that a cake will still turn out even if you switch around the ingredients.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Hopefully by realising that making things at home doesn't have to be expensive or take loads of time, also that ingredients can be substituted as needed.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? For some what they eat is out of their control eg. mum makes the dinner. A push might be to have students making their own lunches using their knowledge of 'healthy' foods.
This was a fabulously designed and equipped kit with lots of interesting bits and pieces.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them In room 2 we made cupcakes!there was two groups corn&apple so ms j decided to change something with our cupcakes she changed the inside of the cupcake. i thought it was so good and the texture was soft like a cloud after it was cooked. After it was cooked the sides were hard and the underneath was soft. When Mrs J put the mixture in cupcake holder it was heavy. (student 1) Before the cupcakes were made they were mushy,it looked like custard and after it was kinda soft and some of us had a biscuit texture and some was burnt. (student 2)

For children who don't get to bake much this was sensational. They experimented with vegetables they had never seen before, they talked a lot about what might happen and then what did happen. The learning went beyond expectations.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? We had a couple of parents helping for this, was interesting to see they were reluctant to try the vegetables before this too. One parent was also quick to tell kids that chickpeas were yuck! The way whānau talk to their kids about food obviously makes a big impact.
