Another amazing School Kit! I had not done any cooking with my students in a long time finding it such a stress - Make Vegetable Cake was a breeze. Everything is so well laid out it was easy to gather resources and set up. Lots of useful links videos and articles too. An enjoyable unit for my tamariki with lots of learning happening fluidly with links to many curriculum areas: science, health, maths... I linked the kit to our inquiry about celebrations around the world with food being such a big part of them.

The kids had fun and the results were very mixed. It was great researching sugar substitutes and we even added our school veges from our school garden to use. The instructions were a little hard to follow but once we were under way it was fine. I would say less is more when it comes to the information.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? As above but we also shared our learning in a school assembly.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Dietary and cultural barriers.
Our Middle Team inquiry has been 'Kai Time' for Term 3 and 4. We used the Vegecake kit to kick start the unit and looked at various Tikanga around food, how food is sourced, and where it comes from. The Vegecake kit fitted in beautifully by exposing kids to 'new' (to them) flavours, thinking about where the ingredients in our food come from and how we can cater to different dietary needs. Thanks, School Kit!
