How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
"I can't wait to go home and try this recipe!" "I really enjoyed learning about the chemistry of a cake, I didn't know how much science was involved" My students now want to see if they can make a healthier version of pancakes!
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The recipe guide pages really guided students in creating their own recipes, know what they could take away and should add to replace it.. I loved the review sheets as it made the students reflect on their learning and think of their next steps.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
I think it has encouraged my students to think differently about science and how chemical reactions work. They might want to take science in high school as a result.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom?
I think the students realised how easy it is to bake your own food so you know exactly the ingredients. Weighing out the ingredients show them how much of each was used. I think they were shocked at how much sugar was used in their store bought cupcakes and to think of healthier alternatives.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health?
I think it encourages students to bake with their families and that home baking is better than store bought food.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What percentage of your students were familiar with tinned veges/fruit from use at home?
60%
How keen were your students to try healthy alternatives in baking at the start of this kit?
How inspired were your students to try healthy alternatives to backing after using the kit?
How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing?
I think by the students going home and telling their whānau how easy the substitutes are and that you can do it on a budget too will impact whānau well being. Also family time baking.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating?
Knowledge is power, if parents don't bake or cook often then it is tricky for the kids to get exposure. So promoting it at school is a great way to get conversations started.
