Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them #1 - I really enjoyed learning about the maillard caramalisation reaction. I went home and told my whānau how to get that yummy tasty crust on the top of the cake. #2 - I didn't think that you could make a cake by using the weight of the egg and then using the same weight for the flour, sugar and butter. I went home and made some for my whānau to show them!
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? scales - for accuracy and the observations sheets. The money and ingredients were most appreciated and they were used.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? The cost of healthy food and also the accessibility of fruit and vegetables.
This was a great way to get chemistry into the classroom. The students loved the opportunity to bake three times and enjoyed making the observations and the taste tests. They also loved that they were like a real chef especially when they could create their own concoction!! The greatest learning happened when the cakes tasted terrible and they had to really go through their recipe to find out where they went wrong. The class loved the kit and I would so recommend to any teacher!

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? children can discuss healthier options and try these at home
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? parents and cost
the vegetable cake was great to have children introduced to kitchen chemistry. Lots of learning before we could do about liquids, solids, gases etc. Children enjoyed the hands-on work through it all. There was lots of great learning for all and loved the team work from all the children. You need to provide more money to purchase ingredients. This is not a cheap unit to do in classes with extra things to buy that you need.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Our parents are not the problem, ours wonders are;)
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Being brave enough to try.
To start with our neurodiverse wonders were unimpressed with the Vege Cake concept, in fact the rolling eyes and groans of disgust were pretty intense. So we changed the ball game and created our own version of ready steady bake. Our vege scientists took to the mahi, experimenting with flavours, colours and textures. The space was a buzz with wonder, discovery and eager anticipation. Flour flew, tin openers buzzed and hand beaters whirled. Observing our learners' deep dive into the baking investigation was fabulous. The laughter, problem-solving and careful communication, of creative ideas, was fabulous to behold. When all ingredients were poured, into the student's choice of tin, we set off for the kitchen, with a wonderous collection of unicorn sparkle, rainbow dash, splat the cat and chick-a dee-doos. Sod's law reader, the fire alarms blasted. Eyes popped and collective sighs of "ooh ohhh" ricocheted across the room. We had to leave our budding creations in the fridge and wait for the fire engines to arrive. The wait however built a sense of expectation and excitement! Later that afternoon the baking went into the oven and the smells that wafted through the school were tantalizing. Now the taste is in the pudding and our budding sous chefs took the cake. They so enjoyed tasting their wonderous creations, and were wrapped that just because no sugar was added, did not mean that their baking would not taste GREAT!

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? By learners using what they've learned to include vegetables into their treats and snacks. Vegetables doesn't have to be horrible or bad tasting
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? None that we could identify. Our students are really privileged
I incorporated the task with my writing class so they had to focus on the layout of writing a recipe first and then we extended it into the different ingredients and changing the properties. My learners had a lot of fun and thought this was a reward for writing the best recipes instead of extending their learning further into the science of baking.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Building whaanau awareness to sugary alternatives that are just as yummy.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Financial seemed the biggest barrier, followed by lack of willingness to try alternatives.
The control cakes were delicious and easy to make. Some groups used hand-held electric beaters and others used a wooden spoon with a similar quality outcome. There were lots of activities to come out of the first session, so we decided to look at reading nutrition labels. Using a set collected from food items, groups looked at a variety of foods, both sweet and savoury and compared the total sugars in each product. They also looked at all the different words for sugar and realised that the labels could be quite misleading.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? We used it in relation with Garden to Table so we used things that were in our garden at school or the gardens at home as well as the cans.

I found this kit fantastic and covered lots of curriculum areas. The kids got very proficient at measuring accurately and thinking about consistency and liquid and adjusting the recipes. The kids enjoyed the experience and loved the idea of adding things that they wouldn't normally add such as avocado, corn, orange and beetroot as well as kale and mint.
