How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? It would have been great to know can substitute flour for a can of chickpeas in lockdown. The students found that their cupcakes could easily have less or no sugar with the banana or apple.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Food prices; busy working parents who look for fast food options; lack of knowledge around healthy eating options..
This was great for science, maths and promoting healthy eating. We used corn, beetroot, chickpeas, bananas and apples. The students loved them, some saying they were the best cupcakes they had tasted. Chickpeas with apples and Chickpeas with bananas were their favourites. We used a blender and put the chickpeas, beetroot and corn in separate containers to make it easy for the students. Creamed corn may have been better than whole kernels and don't forget a can opener if it is not a tab can. Using different coloured paper cupcake holders helped to identify each team's cakes.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? I think it reinforced the choices being made for eating at home for the pupils. Many were having vegetables but not trying them if they had tasted them and not liked them. This reinforced the importance of trying new combinations and thinking about what they were putting in their mouths. Taking more ownership of grocery choices, lunchbox choices and meal planning is also highlighted.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? lack of input in to weekly shop or cooking. Limited access to alternative sources for healthier food.
Kids loved it. They liked being creative and experimenting with a product that they could eat as an end result. Having ownership of what they were creating and discussion around the nutritional value along with measurement component, was a great practical reinforcement of our themes.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? This is tricky because our akonga can talk about what they learnt but in the end the cost will be the driver as to whether they engage with the ideas
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost
The engagement in this learning was top notch and we had a few laughs along the way. trying things they had never thought possible and researching alternative ingredients were the main areas where learning happened. I let them experiment on cake 2 and then we reflected on what had worked and what they would do next, I liked the fact that you got to have a third go. It was all eatable too.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Students could rewrite a recipe from an experience they have made at school and make a recipe book for the school or post in newsletter orc. Ask for the students to work with Whānau and post up a video of them cooking something they like with a healthier spin on it. Also getting other family members to be taste testers is fun!!
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? The cost of food is rising! Vegetables fresh or tinned is expensive for many.
The vegetable cake kit was a perfect resource for me use as it covered food technology and science. In term 3 I had to teach food technology and cover a science fair it killed two birds with one stone.
