How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?
How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
We have children from a lot of different cultures in our hub. This kit prompted a lot of discussion about food from different cultures and how it differs to food in NZ. The children are working on creating their own recipe book with cultural food, modified to be healthier options (reducing sugar etc). It's great to see the ideas they have from this kit, and how it continues to impact their thinking.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The recipe design cards were great. It made it easier for the children to see where they could make substitutions - scaffolded their thinking well. They've provided great talking and discussion points.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
Definitely supported our inquiry topic well. The legacy is in the thinking that our learners have done, and in their understanding that they can modify recipes themselves.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom?
Very effective. The children want to share their learning with others, and are thinking about how they might modify traditional food from different cultures.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health?
The children are wanting to modify traditional food from their cultures. This will lead to lots of discussion at home I imagine! The children also want to produce recipe cards for their modified cultural recipes to share with other children in the class.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What percentage of your students were familiar with tinned veges/fruit from use at home?
90%
How keen were your students to try healthy alternatives in baking at the start of this kit?
How inspired were your students to try healthy alternatives to backing after using the kit?
How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing?
As previously mentioned - the children want to focus on their own traditional cultural dishes. I think this focus helps to create a sense of community, and also shows that we are recognising and valuing the cultural background of our learners. It's a great opportunity for parents to make connections with each other, and provides a shared experience and talking point.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating?
Mainly cost and ease of preparation. As part of our inquiry for the year there are other groups of children who are planting vegetable plants for the children to share and take home in summer. Hopefully this will help a little to ease the financial pressure. Our inquiry this year has created a sense of the 'cool factor' around healthy eating, and this kit has also helped to promote this idea.
