What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? I have a good community of families. For those that don't eat healthy- If nothing else, the biggest barrier for students is their parents.
Logistically I found this one a bit tough. But I put that down to me, not the kit!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "The chickpeas actually tasted the best. We thought the apples would have because they were sweeter." "We didn't have to add heaps of sugar for them to taste nice"
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Learning about the control and changing a little bit each time to see how it gets affected. Often my students would want to change many components but then couldn't work out what had worked etc. They had to make observations and the kit provided plenty of discussion.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They now realise that vegetables can be in a cake and taste nice! They know about the importance of healthy eating and how we can change some aspects of the way we make food to be healthier without affecting the taste too much.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Suggesting alternative ways to make something that is healthier for the family.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? The price of fruit and vegetables at the moment. Time constraints parents are under, especially in busy times of the year farming wise.
We really enjoyed the Vegetable Cake box. It fitted in perfectly as we had a big focus on Science last term. It was great to learn about the 'control' and how important it is not to change too much at a time for more accurate results. There was plenty of opportunity look at the scientific words that were involved in the process. It also had plenty of maths involved, the kids loved the practical hands-on learning involved in this one, especially as they got to eat it all at the end! I was surprised at how much discussion was had around the results, we enjoyed talking about which vegetables were nice in a cake and which were a bit of a fail. The chickpeas were a hit which surprised them all as they were predicted to be the least favourite.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? $$$ and Time and Socio-Cultural Capital
Instructions, recipe cards, review cards = fabulous. Everything is in there, ready to roll. Except need to grab flour, butter, eggs. I whisked the eggs in a big bowl, easier to measure weight. Recommend having multiple, accurate scales (we used the one as our others weren't accurate; and so there were big wait times). We offered various other fruits/veges. We used counters to represent 10 grams. Explored receipe cards with counters prior to writing on them (scaffolded for Level 2 maths learners). Kids LOVED these sessions! Named cupcake cases on the bottom underneath, before filling. Hope that helps ! Enjoy !

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Time-poor parents. Fast, easy to purchase, unhealthy but enticing snack food.
We ordered the Make a Vegetable Cake to tie in with our "Fizzing & Foaming" inquiry. It came with everything we needed and a voucher to cover the cost of some perishable items. It was a hit. We did it in groups of 4-5, with each group making 4 large cupcakes to test. The kids were experimental and enjoyed the experience. Many were shocked and surprised by their results and learned a lot about the science of baking!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them This will never blow up the balloon. This cupcake with peas will taste terrible. Just some of the comments that were proven wrong. One student who does not eat eggs initially didn’t want to take part and then his group really got involved in researching how to eggs could be replaced. I think the biggest impact was how inclusive his group was.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? A surprising one was how students had to refine their searches when researching the vegetables. Learning about chemical reactions because it introduced students to what they are and how they are happening all around them.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Some students had not baked before, so it was a great experience for them. Some had never had chickpeas, but knew hummus so it was a good discovery. I think being brave to try new things, take risks and being innovative is what they will carry with them.

What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? There was a lot of discussion about the effects of sugar on the body and the importance of eating a variety of vegetables. Also how they can be introduced into their diet. How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? The discussion on the reduction of sugar, and the introduction of a variety of vegetables they were not willing to try.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? A reluctance to try new vegetables. Fast, convenience food due to many parents working 2 jobs, or the cost of food.
This was a really fun and engaging activity that everyone enjoyed. The learning included accurate measuring and looking at ratios. Students needed to collaborate to research what each ingredient did and then negotiate their new group recipe. The students were surprised by the results as the vegetable cupcakes were mostly quite tasty. It takes a bit of preparation but it was 100% worth it. Will definitely do this again.
