1: I didn't know that lime juice made that many bubbles! It was really interesting looking at the different liquids and how they made bubbles. 2: It is quite easy to remove sugar from recipes by substituting things. I have been looking at baking at home and what I can change there as well. 3: It is like playing a mystery taste game, you never know when something is going to taste good or horrible... It definitely made you think about what ingredients you substituted.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The tin of apples was very lucrative! It was helpful having the sheets to show the different substitutions, the visual was great and they could clearly see the highlighted circles where they had substituted ingredients
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
They were very taken aback by the bubbles and the chemical reactions, this will stick with them for awhile I think as they keep bringing it up. I also think the knowledge that it is ok to substitute ingredients when cooking, trial and error is a great thing and they are getting pretty good at it!

We have a very healthy class anyway, they eat a lot of fruit so it fit in well. Lots of good discussion about reducing sugar.

reducing sugar and fats within their home cooking by substituting, also the knowledge of how much sugar is in different recipes.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing?
The students can take home the infographics they made with the different substitutions, this will help those that aren't aware of what else you can use. Some of the substitutions were also a lot more cost effective than the main ingredient so they are able to think about it from a cost factor as well.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating?
Cost is a huge factor for our students, many are struggling each week and food is getting more expensive.
