Thanks, School Kit for another awesome learning experience. My students were fully engaged for the whole term and it was easy to add extra aspects to further their learning. Students delved into learning about the properties of substances and were involved in many Science investigations before we started the baking component. Apart from the initial 'Order of Ingredients' trial most of the other baking was rather unappetising, which was fine. It was an exercise in persistence and trial and error and the students were not discouraged by their failures. Fortunately, we called on an expert to judge our final round of cupcakes and she was able to pinpoint the problem. This resulted in one final batch being made which did turn out well. The students shared their learning at an Assembly and presented a PP they had made to show the journey they went through.

My class thoroughly enjoyed the vegetable cake kits. There was great learning in science, discussing variables and scientific processes. There was a lot of learning in only choosing one variable to change in each cake mixture. There was also an opportunity to build a sense of team and mahi tahi - working together as one to create a cake mix that was agreeable to the taste buds.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost. I have a file of photos I cant load below. Will send it separately.
I did this with a group of 10 students, working in pairs. I made the "control cake" with only the base ingredients- no fruit or vegetable. The other students had one of either- chickpeas, beetroot, corn, and orange,or apple. We then blind tasted them all and came up with the unanimous decision that lemon flavoured the best, but chickpeas made them moist. The foolowing week they cooked up their own recipe agian with only base ingredients but their choice of a fruit and a vegetable combined. Again we blind tested, and decided that the fruit overpowered any flavour of vegetable. They liked the fact that their cupcakes were more nutritious with the addition of vegetables.
