Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
"I didn't know you could use vegetables to make a cake and I experimented at home with other vege ingredients". Angus, age 8. "The balloon experiment was the coolest ever and now I know vinegar and baking soda make gas to blow things up". Kompton, age 9. "I really liked making the cakes more than once so you could keep changing things to make it better". Summer, age 8
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The vinegar and baking soda experiments were excellent as the kids enjoyed them so much and was a very graphic way of demonstrating how the baking soda worked in a cake recipeand the concept that different ingredients in different quantities made more or less successful reactions in the cake. I also found the measuring of ingredients worked well for the kids as they had mostly not used scales before and the importance of acurracy in their measuring which they did with great care. The idea of substitution and needing to maintain a balance of the overall ingredients and the different jobs they carried out with the other ingredients, (chemical reactions), to make the ckae successful.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
That it is possible to make a yummy cake with beetroot and it even goes a pretty colour without having to use food colouring. Overall, the concept of experimentation and trying something new.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom?
The kids have a reasonable understanding of healthy food already as we get free fruit in schools for brainfood and and have healthy lunches made onsite. However I do think it helps to reinforce the message.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health?
Realistically I think it is very hard for children to impact their family health as they don't have control of their diet which is dictated by their parents preferences. However, in families poen to suggestion and providing support some children did continue to experiment at home with vegetable ingredients.
