My students have enjoyed this kit. The students were surprised that we could use different vegetables in their cakes. They had many questions regarding what other types of vegetables they could use, and whether they use fresh vegetables. They were involved in a lot of critical thinking regarding different ways of baking. It was definitely an interesting and engaging lesson. Thanks a lot.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I can't believe people eat this stuff!" on beetroot and "I told my mum about our cake and she said maybe we can try this when we make our banana cake next time."

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of living. Income.
The Healthier Kids box was a great opportunity to plan a series of connected curriculum lessons to engage a group of high-needs learners. The value was in the ease of authentically connecting across lessons with a theme of reducing sugar. The actual baking and preparation was a highlight of the connected lessons as this group thrive in a hands-on learning experience. The act of substituting core ingredients like sugar for fruit and vegetables was met with some pushback from my group. They couldn't get past using chickpeas and beetroot in a baking recipe! They were very resistant and unfortunately were not swayed with the finished product. The only recipe that received their approval was when we substituted the sugar with apple. This didn't meet both objectives, as it didn't include 80grams of vegetables but at least it had less sugar! Overall a valuable and engaging series of activities.

This was a fantastic resource. I was however disappointed at the value of the shopping card. I was not able to get all the supplies needed to fulfill the requirements of the kit I had to add at least $30 and supplement some of the ingredients from home. The children however loved the experience that they got out of finding out what they could substitute and how important measuring was and doing things in order.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Distributing recipes with our free veggies.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Parents not realising what is healthy and just continuing to supply unhealthy food as they are easy and the kids want them.
It is at first very confusing to work your way through all the info as a teacher. Where do you start? What is the aim? There are no chronological steps to follow. The teacher's one-sheet info is helpful and that is what I used to gather my thoughts and work out a strategy. The science part as well as videos are aimed at Year 7 and older. I adjusted what I looked at to suit my Year 5s and 6s. My students enjoyed the baking and choosing part. We are going to continue to see what we can make with substitutes. Also, as our students are planning a veggie garden, what recipes we can design to go with our veggies. And... we are also designing recipes to use with the leftover fruit we have in school like apple pancakes, etc. So we are on a roll now. Thanks to this kit! Thank you.

The children really enjoyed this kit. The lesson guide was super helpful and the videos supported this module perfectly. The children's reflections on their cakes were honest, where some were very successful and some were not. The scoring 'vocabulary' - ie structure was helpful in getting the children to be specific with their reflections.
