Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "At first we thought it would taste bad but it didn't taste too bad you couldn't really taste the apple". "I enjoyed learning a way to put disgusting vegetables into a cup cake, then at the end turning out so yummy"
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Scales - very handy for practising exact measurement. Base recipe planning sheets.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Hopefully that veges are not all bad and can be used to reduce the amount of sugar needed in baking.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Awareness of the addictive properties of sugar and how we can reduce intake.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? cost
We did this with our year 8 students are part of food technology. Week 1 was making the control, experimenting with how to get bubbles and watching the YouTube clips on sugar. We also gave the students tasters of the pureed veges so they could make an informed choice about substitute ingredients for the following week. We were shocked at how reluctant some students were towards trying the different vegetable purees and reluctance to include as substitute ingredients. The following week the students made their vege substitute cakes and most were pleasantly surprised. Only recommendation would be more information about the properties of the vege substitutes. Thanks School Kit and sponsors of the kit.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I let the groups work together on the cooking and just helped them when they needed it so the interactions were interesting. I also posted pics and videos on out class Dojo for parents who said their kids came home and told them about what they had done. A few asked for recipes. The judging of the cakes was interesting as they all tried to be kind and constructive.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? I think the ingredients...we didn't really use the cards as they were a bit above where my class were at. I adapted them to fit my learning intentions.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Pricing out their recipe was interesting because they made comments about how expensive things were (eggs, kumara etc)To read the recipe before cooking and to tick off the ingredients as you put them in. (One group left out the sugar and put in salt by accident !!!)
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom? I think it was good to see how different ingredients can still make a delicious cake. The chickpeas were the substitute for flour in the recipe they chose so we talked about being gluten-free.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? We live in Dargaville and so kumara is a common vegetable and they all went home with the recipe.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Not sure but many kids commented that their mum or dad didn't know you could make a cake out of corn or pumpkin.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Probably cost and variety.
We used this kit as a part of a science unit on Chemistry in the Kitchen. After doing an experiment on what makes a cake rise we split into 6 groups and each group was given a mystery ingredient (I added pumpkin and kumara as well). Each group had to research a recipe and write all the ingredients. They then went onto the Countdown site and priced up their ingredients as a math activity. Each group got the chance to make their cake and got to judge each cake. (The Principal got to try each one and he fed back to each group about his scores.) It was a valuable kit and the kids had so much fun.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? With the cost of living at present, the students could see how they could contribute to baking at home. A way they could contribute to helping out at home.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? The current cost of fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh food. The fast pace living where packaged lunchbox snacks are timesaving and convient.
We have been looking at project-based learning across the curriculum to enhance motivation and enthusiasm with a focus on boys writing. The Make the Vegetable Cake inspired our learners and gave them agency over the type of cake they designed and the substations choosen.

With vegetable-based icings and decorations, they not only honed their culinary skills but also embraced healthier eating habits in an engaging way. The smiles of enjoyment on everyone's faces made it clear that this innovative bake-off was a resounding success.

A fun kit that got children, thinking a lot about the science behind cooking, and the adjustments that needed to be made when substituting ingredients. It really taught the skills of measurement, observation and investigation. Alongside all this it promoted the inclusion of healthy eating. The children were very surprised at how good vegetables in a cake could taste!!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them * I didn't realise that the beetroot would actually make the cake taste nice, because I don't usually like beetroot.*It's really good that we can use fruit and veges instead of white sugar, because my dad says I eat too much sugar.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The poster - helped explain the functions of each ingrredient in the cake. The scales made measuring accurately easy to do. Providing the tins with some swap out options was a great starting point for their own research. The recipe cards helped them when designing their own cake #2 and #3.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Science is fun, especially doing chemical change when you can produce something edible at the end. You don't need white sugar to produce something yummy.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom? It was a great starting point for discussion.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? Many of my students wanted to go home and experiment with different fruit and vege combinations and make their own cakes.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? None really, they all had access to fruit and veges at home.
Wow! This is a fantastic kit. My class loved it from the moment I opened the box. There was so much learning that took place. Some of the learning that took place for my Year 4 students: * using scales and measuring accurately * learning what 60grams looked like * understanding temperatures on the oven * researching what would make a good swap out ingredient so that the cake had less sugar and was healthier * how to review a recipe and make changes for the next cake * working in a team, negotiating about what ingredients to use It was a great follow on from our Science inquiry where we had been looking at chemical and physical changes. I would definitely do this again.
