Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Angela: When you use vegetables it can make food taste good as an ingredient, not just yuck. Sam: I learned to work in a team. I learnt that I can bake things muself not just buy them from countdown, baking it myself is better. Tim: it was an example of an experiment and I like experiments Damon: I was nervous about what they might taste like using less vegetables and reducing sugar
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The recipe, the poster to display, the inclusion of the ingredients and the gift card. Although it didn't entirely cover the cost of eggs, it was nice to get something.

We had lots of fun measuring and making our own recipe. Kūmara can be used for cooking in sweet things not just savoury. It was a fun science project.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom? We were able to use less sugar in a recipe by including vegetables. Using less sugar you can still make tasty food.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? Shared their learning that they were making cupcakes with less sugar, and that food with less sugar works. Excited to share learning at home, that they were making 'cupcakes with Kūmara'. Vegetables can be put into sweet things.

This was a great experience for our class. We had been working on Kūmara for our inquiry learning so it was a fun way to add cross-curricular learning with both maths and science. Awesome to do something hands-on and a bit different. I really appreciated the resources and feedback from other teachers when I planned this work. Making the recipe myself in advance was quite helpful as it helped me to understand the amounts. Additionally, it gave the learners an opportunity to collaborate in different ways.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Tuakana teina - students teaching their families the recipes they created.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of living - chip packets etc are a cheap and easy alternative for busy parents.
The students found this a great learning experience. They were inspired to try options that had a range of vegetables and all agreed that their cupcakes tasted delicious. We also made them gluten and dairy-free to cater for class needs - this didn't have and adverse effects on the recipes. Mathematically, substituting the ingredients wasn't much of a challenge. The bigger challenge was in the scientific aspects of the kit - especially with creating bubble strategies and looking for ingredients that would promote rising. I will happily use this kit again!

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of food at the moment, especially fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables.
We loved this school kit. We got so much learning out of it - Maths (measurement, ratio, etc) and Science (changing state). The students were able to predict, experiment and then refine and although most first cakes failed, their final cakes were yummy, which really showed their evaluation skills and reworking. Every child designed and made a recipe card at the end to keep, and we made a class online cookbook using Google Slides. Also, looking at how much sugar is in food was very powerful.

Using veges was a good idea but I'm not sure I liked them that much. I guess I need to get used to them.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Replacing chippie packets with a home backed muffin that has fibre and fruit/veges in it.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? When a single parent doesn't own a car and doesn't want to drag their kids out on a bus to get groceries, a trip to the dairy is a survivable option. Be nice to see the odd muffin sent to school woth tjhe sachet of 'add boiling water' soup/noodles.
We did this once per week over a few weeks. Great fun, you do need to have some baking experience, and equipment. It was pretty crazy with 25 in groups of 3-4 in a normal classroom but the kids loved it so it was worth the effort. We used to kick off science fair so we emphasised the repeatability, variables, testing, following the scientific method, evaluating etc. Def recommend, advise you to resources yourself with a whizz stick to blend the apple, beetroot etc. Big thanks to School Kit for the resources and taking us out of our comfort zone. The supporting paper work and Evaluation Forms were great as well. You can really extend this, and a bit of research first into things such as egg alternatives is useful to extend curiosity.
