“PayPal Purchase Protection failed completely in my case I filed a claim (Dispute Case ID PP-R-SVI-629461975) after purchasing a product through G2A that was sold as a "12-month ChatGPT subscription". The subscription stopped working after only a few days. The product I received was therefore clearly not what was advertised or paid for. PayPal nevertheless closed the case in favour of G2A, stating that there was “no evidence that the item was misrepresented.” This decision is unacceptable. A service sold for 12 months and terminated within days is, by definition, not the service that was purchased. What makes this even worse is that I bought five similar subscriptions and three sellers issued refunds directly after the subscriptions failed. Yet PayPal ignored this obvious context and placed the burden on me to obtain written proof from OpenAI explaining why a third-party subscription was terminated. I purchased what appeared to be a legitimate product. I was not responsible for investigating how a reseller supplied it. PayPal’s so-called buyer protection offered no meaningful protection at all. Instead of examining the basic facts, PayPal accepted the seller platform’s position and left the customer to absorb the loss. The amount was small. The principle is not. Customers use PayPal because they expect protection when a product is materially different from what was sold. In my case, PayPal failed that basic responsibility. After this experience, I have no confidence in PayPal Purchase Protection for digital products. Buyers should be extremely cautious. When a digital service fails within days instead of lasting for the advertised period, PayPal may still decide that nothing was misrepresented.”
