How are the Handle and Fittings?
a great forge to entrust to make your dream katana/nodachi the fact that they dont just do standard length katana speaks volumes the blades even come with a certifacate of authantisity (part of why it lost a star. will talk on later) the blades themselves are very high quality and come incredibly sharp the blades themselves are gorgious one of the two issues i had with my katana on arival was that the certifacate has the wrong type of steel writen on it (the blade is still what i asked for thankfully) just means the certifacate i recieved with it is invalid. the second thing that took off the first star was how tight the saya is at least on mine while its good for the sword not to just fall out of its saya when you slightly tilt it its also not good if it takes too much effort. i had the secomd issue it took a total of 10lbs to pull it from the saya. (this was also remedied by simply repeatedly pulling it out ant putting it back into the saya)

I wanted to go with a budget custom katana so I decided to pull the trigger on Hanbon forge. Ordering here through swordis made the process super easy and offered more options than expected. The price was unbeatable for the quality. Turnaround time was about a month. The quality of the build was fantastic. No rattles, nothing out of place, and no blemeshes. Every option I chose was done correctly in the build. The transitions from the fittings to the tsuka were perfect and nothing stuck out or looked off center. The blade has no imperfections and has a great balance. If you are looking for something entry or practice level this is a great option to go with. Lastly swordis gets a 5/5 as usual for making this process super easy.

Everything as I ordered, except maybe the stamp on the tang… I can’t see it so I assume it’s there. Quality and workmanship top notch. Blade and hamon are beautiful. Arrived early!

Worth it! A fantastic overall sword for the price! I ordered on www.swordis.com a custom Hanbon Forge Hira Zukuri mat cutter using their customization web tool. I ordered September 3rd 2024 and received the sword on September 25th 2024 Which is really fast! The customer experience was fantastic. I’ve got 3 custom Hanbon Hira zukuri. this blade looks the best. No hammer ripples, Perfectly clean true Hira. The other two looked like they just sanded down a Shinogi zukuri to achieve the Hira profile. It seems they perfected the process. Tight Ito wrap, tight menuki. Good saya retention, clean koiguchi. Nice feel. Watch the 2 minutes ish video review for a better look. https://youtu.be/grqNuPcKPDE?si=I4kn1dDoaOgMii0Y It’s great for the $142.00 build cost. I haven’t cut with it yet, but it checks all the boxes. They did a wonderful job on profiling the blade. They make nice tsukas with tight wraps. For the money it’s really terrific. It’s a little less expensive than a Munetoshi Yuki Samgakdo which I have wanted for a while and they are always out of stock. It makes me really happy that there are now other options like this. It’s sharp (cuts phone book paper which is extra thin) but I’m going to give it a few passes on the work sharp and strop before I cut with it just to make sure the edge sharpness is consistent throughout the blade. It may not need me to sharpen it but being a fanatic for having the sharpest possible swords, I just want to. I’m looking forward to future cutting with this bad boy. It feels light and nimble. I feel this may be an agile tricking sword as well as a good tatami mat cutter.. Recommended for sure! There is nothing on the market available of this quality for this cost out there at all. I know. I moderate a katana forum, and have more than 32 Katanas in my current collection. I am an avid backyard freestyle cutter, a youtuber for katanas, and know a thing or two. You cannot beat the quality to price ration in this price bracket. You just can’t. I hope this was helpful.
