How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Definitely a discussion point for whānau and somewhere to get the conversation going. Also knowing that we can use alternatives for our cookings. Also we discussed allergies and why we might look at alternatives when it comes to cooking/baking.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost, have they been introduced to it before and something that they will actually eat?
Students had an enjoyable afternoon making these vegetable cakes as we split them into smaller groups with the different fruit/vege element shared between the groups. Some even got to taste new food that they had never had before! Only thing is that I had a number of sheets left over and felt like I was wasting them as we didn't need so many. Otherwise a great resource to be used with the class.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? We grew lettuce hydroponically in the classroom then ate it on fresh salad sandwiches. We will be planning more healthy baking or making ideas.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Parents not cooking. The community is too far from fresh shopping for those without a car so the kids get heaps of rubbishy processed packet food.
Kids really enjoyed making the cakes and they were amazed at how they could exchange sugar for vegetables and still enjoy the cakes.

The kit was a wonderful way to do some hands on mathematics while also looking at science and literacy. The students were very engaged in planning for baking their cakes and there were a number of combinations which sounded pretty strange but tasted great. The children were very suprised at how vegetables assimilated into the cakes and tasted great.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? It's too easy for their parents to buy unhealthy food.
I was really frustrated. I reeceived the package and was so excited to try making the cake with my students. I had no idea where to start and what to do. I kept on reading about other people saying it's fantastic, but no recipe or instructions anywhere. I would still like to try, but if I have no instructions, I am happy to send the package back.

Our terms focus was based on 'happy, healthy me' so this vege cake making was appropriate. Students were made aware of the food pyramid, what to eat most and what to eat small amounts of. We focused on hygiene also so this was helpful when gathering ingredients and making the cake. Over all a great celebration/ending to our unit.
