About Chilton Furniture:

Chilton is a family-owned, Maine company dedicated to selling fine, wood furniture, all American-made. We are known for our Shaker-inspired designs, and also feature Arts & Crafts, modern and cottage style pieces in solid cherry, maple, ash, walnut, and quarter-sawn oak. We are also known for the quality craftsmanship of our custom work. Many of our pieces can be custom built to your specifications.

Much of our furniture is handcrafted in small Maine workshops, and we also work with boutique craftsmen in New Hampshire, Vermont and the Midwest, many of whom have been partners for decades. All of these cabinetmakers have a Shaker-like dedication to workmanship, function, and simplicity of line and form. All of Chilton’s pieces are built to our high standards, and a growing number are original, proprietary designs.

I was pleased with the table. The bed, described as having a low profile, was very high. Through a lengthy process, we were able to exchange it for a lower bed. Everyone was pleasant, but ordering and billing were confusing. Finally, the right-height bed arrived. Sadly the wood was not attractive or of the same quality as all the other furniture we have purchased from Chilton over the years. Disappointing.

We're sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your replacement bed. All of our standard dimensions are available for each product on our website, and we're always happy to help plan the dimensions for you upon request. When your original bed felt too high, we happily exchanged for a custom lower version of the bed for you. We're not sure what happened during your billing process, or what was disappointing about the wood on your new piece since we have not been able to reach you. I have not received furniture yet! No updates from Chilton indicating when it will arrive. However I do receive the light I ordered.

The table and chairs we ordered are absolutely beautiful. It took a long time to get, longer than anticipated. During that time Chilton never contacted us or gave us an update. When we contacted them for an update it felt like we were asking for extra service. A simple email letting us know we we’re not forgotten would seem to be a simple way to provide better customer service.

We try to provide our best estimates for lead times at the time of the sale, or whenever requested by the customer, but we don't always hit the nail on the head. We see that your order was delayed by about a week beyond the quoted window of 20-24 weeks, and although it looks like we were able to provide updates upon request, we apologize for not being more proactive in notifying you of the delay. Our stools were not in stock so has to be shipped. We were not notified when they arrived until I called to check. A couple of weeks later someone called to see if we had picked them up. We had, 2 weeks earlier. Someone needs to follow through with orders.

I ordered my piece online and received very courteous and professional delivery. The driver told me I would receive a questionnaire about my experience but I did not. My Campbell Sideboard is generally well made and beautiful to look at, but over the months I've noticed annoying flaws, such as 1. chip-out on the top of 4 drawer sides caused by the dovetail jig, 2. a drawer protruding out on one side, so not flush with the face, and 3. another drawer swelling and sticking during the warmer months. If I'd built this piece myself I would not have let it out of the shop. In future, I would want to see the piece in person before buying.

I’m very disappointed with the delivery timing. The date of purchase was September 24. I was quoted 10-12 weeks for delivery but verbally told at the time of purchase it would likely take much less time. The nightstand was supposed to be a Christmas present which was 13 weeks from purchase date. In late November, I touched base and was told that the builder was going to move order to the front of the line. Clearly they did not. I picked up the nightstand this week 18 weeks after I placed my order and more than 2 months after the order was moved to the “front of the line”. After posting my initial review, I communicated with the owner via email and phone. I learned the circumstances leading to the delayed delivery. The contract builder had recently changed ownership and the new owner experienced start up issues. Also, due to the delays, in January I was given a rebate on my purchase. Although I was disappointed in the delayed delivery, Chilton and its owners are committed to do right by their customers.

Valued Customer, We are so sorry to hear about your negative experience with your nightstand, and we are particularly sorry to hear that you did not have it in time for Christmas. Our whole team feels terrible about it. As I mentioned in my email to you, your nightstand is being built by a relatively new builder for Chilton who has been having a little trouble getting getting up to speed. Frankly, we should have anticipated that there could be some start-up issues and we should have been more conservative in our lead time estimate. We are very sorry for that. We were pleased to share with you a summary of all of the initiatives we have taken over the past two years to reduce our lead times (we are making progress, but clearly there is more work to be done), and we were also pleased to offer something to you to help make up for your experience. Quality is good, however a 13 week turnaround is simply too long, especially when you consider the size of the product ordered, 2 small bookcases. I plan to continue updating my home but will choose another retailer to help me furnish.

Nick, Hi and thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear you are happy with the quality of your new furniture, but sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the build times. Over the last five years, we have prioritized local production. We are happy with the quality of the results, but it has resulted in longer lead times for our Maine builders. The good news is that our builders have hired 4 full-time craftsmen and 1 part-time craftsman and lead times are starting to accelerate, and we will continue to work on it. I love the Davis stool, BUT I ordered these in August expecting them to be delivered in December, and that did not happen. I didn’t get them until January, which was a disappointment during the holidays.

I bought a Shaker Arch bed frame, which is really beautiful. I love it. It took a long time to get - I was told 16 weeks and it took closer to almost 6 months to get. I would also like a little more attention from the salespeople when I come into the store. Many times I am ignored until I ask them to help me. This is why I did not give a 5 star rating. They are very nice once they acknowledge you, it is just the first part that is missing - the greeting and showing a willingess to help when you walk in.

The furniture itself is of high quality but, the actual production ran a bit over the estimated time and a delivery wait of 3 weeks is poor service.

David & Amy, We are glad you are happy with your furniture but very sorry you were disappointed in your build time. Occasionally our builders do run longer than the estimates they provide us. We are investing significantly in stock of more popular items in order to smooth out production for our builders and reduce build times going forward. Great EXCEPT the seat height is very disappointing. I was certain that when I called the store to ask about the seat height, I was told that the seat was 21' at its highest setting. Very disappointed that the seat's highest setting is 18". I had major back surgery several years ago, so seat height is a big issue--ideally my hips are higher than my knees when I sit.
