I recently rented a vehicle from GoldCar in Madrid and had a generally satisfactory experience, though with a few caveats to be aware of. Positives: The booking process was smooth, and the car provided was clean, modern, and performed well throughout my rental period. The pick-up location was easy to find, and the return process was straightforward without unnecessary delays. The vehicle itself was reliable and met my expectations. Areas for Improvement: One of the noticeable drawbacks was the waiting time at the counter upon arrival — it took longer than expected, and the staff seemed rushed, likely due to the volume of customers. While the staff were polite, the interaction felt somewhat transactional rather than customer-focused. Another important point is the additional charges. GoldCar offers various add-ons such as full insurance coverage, fuel policies, and other optional extras. If you’re not familiar with these, the total price can increase significantly compared to the initial booking rate. I recommend thoroughly reading the rental terms and conditions in advance and being clear about what’s included in your booking to avoid surprises at the counter. During the booking process, I reserved my GoldCar rental through Ryanair and opted for the full insurance coverage offered via RentalCover.com for £29. However, upon arrival at the GoldCar counter, I was informed by the staff that they do not recognize third-party insurance like RentalCover.com. They explained that in the event of an accident or any damage, GoldCar would immediately charge me £3,000, and I would need to handle any reimbursement directly with RentalCover.com — a process they warned could take months, or even years. This left me feeling uncertain and uneasy, especially being in a new country. To avoid potential complications, I reluctantly opted for GoldCar’s own insurance at an additional cost of £90.

Rented a car from Santander airport. The pick up instructions indicate that the Goldcar office is off site and you will met from your flight by a transfer service "at the Goldacar Meeting point". There is no such meeting point, only a general, public meeting point in the car park where no transfer vehicle was waiting. After a couple of phone calls we were transferred to the offices 40 minutes after we arrived. The company then started the hard sell on extra insurance - which I didn't want. They took a 1100 Euro deposit plus a 65 Euro payment for a tank of fuel plus a 21 Euro payment for refilling the tank - even though I said I would return it full. In other words, they charge you for the work involved in refilling the car even if they don't have to do it! The car reeked of cigarettes and a week's driving with the windows open did little to improve the awful smell. The car was dirty inside and out and had numerous small knocks in addition to the two larger ones indicated on their report form. The salesman said that they were not interested in small marks on the car but I strongly suspect that this story would have changed when I returned the car. I took photographs of all the panels and was a little surprised when a worker coming out of a nearby factory suggested to me that I take plenty of pictures - he had obviously heard plenty of arguments from angry customers. When I returned the car the salesman agreed that no further damage had been done to the car but he would not give me any written confirmation of this statement. He accepted that the tank had been refilled but would not refund the 21 Euro "fuel service charge". The only redeeming feature of the service was that he agreed to return us to the airport terminal in the hire car - thus saving us from a wait for a transfer bus.

We hired through Holiday Autos (who were utterly terrible). When we returned our hire car (because we didn't take the extra insurance), they went over it with a fine tooth comb pointing out the tiniest scratches and trying to charge us for them. Fortunately all the scratches they pointed out just rubbed away with my finger. A total joke of a company who just try and rip you off. AVOID
