“Got my first box and the snacks are awesome! Unfortunately one of the jelly snacks was punctured before I received the box so a little bit of it had spilled on the inside and made things sticky.”
“This is a review of June’s box and my first box. I thought they were presented well in a nice box and the information book was excellent. All items were fresh. My only real criticism is and maybe a culture thing, but there was not a lot of taste and although each item was individually presented they all were very much the same in texture and content. As l have stated this was my first box and l can’t fault the company in dlivery, presentation or quantity and after three boxes then perhaps a better evaluation maybe ascertained on the content of taste and variation. This is very much a more”
“I love the box since it gives you a variety of traditional Japanese treats that you won't easily find in the market. You also get nice information from their booklet and dishware that you can use and it will last for a while. I am only a bit sad that shipping was a bit rough on the package so some of the contents were crushed in transit. I think adding a fragile sticker can help letting shippers know to handle it with more care”
“Overall pretty good but have to agree with other reviews that the box isn’t cheap. With shipping it’s almost US$50 per box, and most of the snacks, while tasty, aren’t anything dissimilar to what you can find in Asian supermarkets in North America. For the May box the special snack was the puffer fish, but the air-filled plastic bag wasn’t enough to protect it and there was no extra cushioning whatsoever so it came crushed into many pieces and it was quite disappointing. The info booklet was a nice touch and pleasant surprise, and there were two extra snacks from the April box included. I like the box and the marketing and packaging are beautiful, but on the fence because of cost and not sure if I would continue to subscribe once my current one is up.”
“This is my 3rd box and a crack or squish to an item is not a big deal. They try their best to pack it in and bubble wrap the box so minimal damage.
Pricing is a little more than I would have liked to spend but I figure I'm not travelling anyways so this is a nice treat.
I was disappointed with the May box. I was really looking forward to experience the Fukuruko Shiruko but it came in pieces, and there was water damage on the bottom left side of the box that has turned into a small hole. I just messaged and sent images to CS so will see what they can do about the issue.”
“Great value for the price! All the snacks are delicious as is the tea. Be warned some of the more delicate snacks may not be picture perfect upon arrival. Other than that I would say this box is near perfect!”
“This box was absolutely wonderful!! The only problem was that the Fukuruko Shiruko was in pieces, and there was water damage on the bottom right side that has turned into a small hole. I hope they find solutions to these, otherwise it was great!!”
“I enjoy this service a lot! It’s fun seeing new treats and trying new things - some I didn’t even knew existed - every month. However, all three of my boxes have been delivered with broken food items 😔 Crepes and fukuruko shiruko aren’t as fun to experience as crumbs. I’m sure the items don’t leave them that way, but I hope they can find a solution!
Overall, this is definitely something I look forward to every month. The treats have been delicious. The postcards are beautiful and the booklets are cute and informative. I really appreciate the added culture/history sections too!”
“Love the little snacks and little story booklet that explains where in Japan the treats come from and the holidays in the month. There are some damages with the more fragile treats. But they are still very delicious. No major complaints from me. Can wait for the next box. 😄🌸”
“We've subscribed for the 3 months box to give this a try. It is our first ever subscription box and we found it quite fun. We love the Japanese culture and since during these pandemic period, it was refreshing to be able to try out new themed Japanese snacks when we can't travel. The first box came and it was the May Box - Mochi & Sakura Tasting Tour.
I thought the items were not bad, there were some hit and misses definitely. But overall quite fun to unpack. Another downside is that it is rather pricey per box because of the delivery. I live in Singapore and the box costs SGD63.80 after factoring in the delivery. Let's see the next box but I think it is unlikely that I would constantly purchase this apart from special seasonal items.
I was also very surprise to receive the May box in April, I thought I was getting the April box - Matcha. So I do hope that in May I will NOT get the same box! Fingers crossed!”
“I am signed up for a 3 month subscription currently, with my first box being the April box: Matcha Moments. I came with a good variety of Matcha snacks as well as some Sakura snacks. When I signed up I got the two extra bonus items for life, however these items weren't described in the booklet but when I looked they were from the last box. It kind of felt like I was just getting leftovers instead of actual bonus items.
So far the sizes of everything is pretty good, with some of the smaller items coming in pairs. Once it shipped, the shipping was pretty quick. So far, it lives up to its price of around $35 per box.”
“Tl;dr: Do you already love japanese flavors/snacks? Redbean, matcha, and sakura your go-to everyday flavors? Does the added shipping not bother you? This box is for you!
I tried three boxes and all of them were OKAY. Each box had at least one thing I really loved and one thing I had to spit out. Most items are good, with a decent variety.
For the Sakura and Mochi box the fish wafer came broken, as did my friend who was also getting the box (super disappointing since it was a really odd and new sort of item to try).
The three boxes I got had a sort of same-y issue, where there were starting be some staple items and flavors like monokas (the wafers taste gross and the filling can be good or bad. The sweet soysauce one was disgusting, some of them the wafers fall to pieces and others can be (enjoyably) eaten like an oreo)
Three boxes in a row really pushed sakura as a flavor (to which I can say typically tasted like literally nothing but smelled nice) As well as red bean paste. Let me tell you, I don't hate red bean paste. It's. . .fine, in moderation. But I can't eat it by the spoonful and there was so much of it in these boxes. I know it's a Japanese dessert staple but I would have liked some more variation on flavor. Everything fish flavored was not my cup of tea, though. Fortunately only the first box seemed to push it.
Now for the best part of these boxes. The creme de la creme, the top of the top; it's kinako. It basically tastes like unsweet peanut butter and these boxes encouraged me to purchase an entire bag of the stuff. I can now have kinako for everything. Put it on ice cream. Put it on mochi. Consume it sprinkled on PB&J, put it into your chocolate chip cookie batter. Go ham, the stuff is amazing.
Now price. The price is fine. . .before shipping. Once you include shipping the price becomes a little steep. Almost 50$ per a box (in my case) with about 30$-40$ worth of product inside. So yeah, not great, but not awful.
Lets talk about non food. The plate was super cute, and I use it as a nice trinket dish. The cup was equally cute, matched the plate and is not good for hot liquids at all. I burned my hands trying to drink tea out of this cup, and it sweated bullets when I put juice and some ice in it later. Still adorable. Then there's the bowl. The bowl is plastic, and small. It's a decent ice cream bowl or rice bowl. It's also apparently edible and contains wheat, milk, soy, and egg allergens according to the booklet. I haven't attempted to consume my bowl. Someone please tell me if the plastic bowl is tasty.
Tea. Box 1: Salt water. Box 2: Soup broth. Box 3: Normal?? I haven't tried the third tea yet, I'm almost afraid. The first two boxes seemed to prioritize pretty tea over drinkable tea. The soup broth one was fine, but I wish someone would have warned me.
Misc grievances: The booklet didn't tell me the rice paper was edible in box 2. Would have been nice to know, the mochi was delicious but I didn't realize the rice paper it was stuck to could be eaten.
Overall: The experience was fun, I enjoyed it. Sure there's a lot of complaining here but at the end of the day only one or two items went uneaten from most of the three boxes I got. 50$ is just a bit too much for me (After shipping) though, especially if some boxes will have a third or more of the content be a miss. I don't like monokas, or fish flavored things, and I prefer my red bean paste in moderation which at the end of the day means I'd personally rather save my money. I do think this box is for some people though, and those people will adore it. Overall I'll continue following what comes out of these boxes to (hopefully) see a larger variety of flavor as the seasons change and likely only subscribe here or there for one time purchases.”
“There is a nice variety of desserts and I felt like it was worth the money. I was a little disappointed that the blowfish wafers came completely destroyed since it was like a centerpiece of the box (you're supposed to punch a little hole in it and submerge it in the tea that came with it). I know it's inevitable to have some delicate things get broken in transit, but maybe they could've packed it better.
The booklet is nice quality and explains everything in detail.”
