“This is a total rip-off. I’m a tutor and I was contacted by Tutoroo and asked if I was interested in providing English language tuition to a student in Brisbane. I agreed and was put in contact with my prospective student. That’s fine. What is not fine in anyway is the fact that my first two sessions require me to work for free. The student was asked to pay for a number of lessons up-front. They paid that money directly to Tutoroo. I completed a 1.5 hour initial lesson with my student two weeks ago. When I inquired about the fact that I have not received any payment for this lesson, I was informed by Tutoroo that this money goes to the company. Likewise, the money which I should receive for my second lesson also goes to the company. So, the student has paid upfront for provision of a service. The tutor receives nothing for the first two lessons. The language used by the company about payment is very vague (probably deliberately) and they state that the payment for the first two lessons goes to Tutoroo, with a reasonable inference being that it is then forwarded on to the tutor. However, this is not the case. So I’m expected to work for free for two lessons. Needless to say, I won’t be continuing my work with this company.”
“I didn't check reviews before jumping in. Booked a native German tutor for the bargain price of 33euros for 90 mins. I had to pay for 4 lessons upfront.
Now the tutor is unavailable. There isn't anyone else listed who is a German native who is the same price.
There is someone available but they charge twice as much.
There isn't a dedicated customer service email address to write to. Just the people on live chat.
I've requested a refund. I've had no response.”
“Requested a refund after I couldn’t get a tutor. They ignore you and don’t get in touch. The only person who is responsive is the social media person who seems to be kindly flagging the issue to the right team but doesn’t get my refund. They then delete my comments warning people not to use them. I paid over two months ago and still have no lesson and no refund. Awful service! AVOID THIS COMPANY.”
“Do not use this company. I tried to get a French tutor and spent time looking at who was available and lived close by for in person classes. Sadly the tutor we chose was not available as they had moved abroad. I requested a refund and Tutoroo promptly told me they would help me find another tutor. I didn’t love that they wouldn’t give me a refund but was ok with them finding another tutor. They then recommended four tutors, none of whom were available at times that work for us. I requested a refund and they are ignoring me or refusing to give one. They now fail to respond to any messages I send (I have multiple unanswered messages) and so I have paid €60 to get nothing in return and zero help or response. Really poor customer service.”
“Avoid TUTOROO – Scam Alert!
I am extremely disappointed with TUTOROO and feel utterly scammed by their deceptive practices. My experience with this platform has been nothing short of frustrating and unethical.
TUTOROO falsely advertises tutors in specific locations, but once payment is made, the tutors suddenly become unavailable. This bait-and-switch tactic is unacceptable. When I reached out to their customer service for a refund, I was met with a no-refund policy which was never agreed upon or mentioned, even though they failed to deliver the service I paid for.
Many of the tutor profiles on their platform are fake or inactive. They suggested unsuitable alternatives that didn’t meet my needs, further proving their lack of integrity. On top of that, their customer support was unresponsive and unhelpful, making it nearly impossible to resolve the issue. You can find many many such cases from multiple people online, please research before you get scammed by these Singaporean criminal organization.
I’ve also read numerous complaints from tutors who claim they are not paid fairly or at all for their services. This indicates a broader pattern of unethical behavior that affects both students and tutors.
I strongly urge everyone to avoid using TUTOROO. They are running a scam, and it’s important to spread awareness to protect others from falling victim to this fraudulent platform.”
“It’s a s c a m. No refunds if you don’t find a tutor. Their line is no refunds payable if one tutor can accomodate you. There’s no time limit however so they can just keep sending you tutors and not return your money. They also take the first two lessons of the tutors fees so tutors work for free. Tutor or student - DO NOT USE TUTOROO”
“I found Tutoroo through an advert for teachers in my home city and paid in advance for lessons. I quickly found out there was only one tutor teaching my language of choice in my city and they weren’t available. I asked if I could have a refund within a few days of my purchase as the service I requested wasn’t available. Tutoroo refused a refund and then stopped responding to me because online lessons were available to me, despite this not being the service that I was looking for.
Disappointing that the company would advertise a service and then refuse to provide a refund when it wasn’t available.”
“Please do not trust this website. I am a tutor, and provided the first 2-weeks of tutoring with a student for free, as is Tutoroo's policy. However, when my student decided not to continue, I did not receive the partial refund that Tutoroo is supposed to give. The support team alleged they had processed my payment on March 15th 2024 and that it would take 1-45 days to process. I am still waiting (30 May 2024), and all I have received from the support team is excuses on why I have not been given my refund.
I would not have given my services for free, if I knew I was not going to be given a partial refund as they stated they would provide.
Looking online, I see similar things have happened to other tutors and students.
Do not use!”
“From both a student and a tutor perspective, avoid this site!! Firstly, I think it's ridiculous to expect tutors to work for free for 2 weeks for the OPPORTUNITY not the guarantee of earning an unbelievably low hourly rate. Secondly, they match you with students that are very far from your actual location and you are committed to teach them once the fee is paid, without any opportunity to refuse. Moreover, the high rate they charge in exchange for putting tutors and students in touch with one another should mean there is minimally some degree of customer service but their customer support is dismal! I would receive a reply a few days after contacting them, even if I frequently needed help because THEIR automated service had deactivated my account. I finally had enough and decided to withdraw from the platform and, not only was my student refused a refund or offered a tutor that filled their criteria, they refused to delete my information or account. I have now asked directly easily 10 times for them to completely delete my profile and and they will only allow me to deactivate it (because laughably, they didn't want me to spoil my good track record with their platform in case I wanted to rejoin). There isn't even a delete account button on the platform. I don't believe this Singapore-based company should be legally able to operate the way it does. It's absolutely shameful how they are scamming students and educators. As I researched the company more recently with a view to reporting them to a few data protection authorities, it is clear to me how many positive reviews and recommendations across online language forums are complete fictions. There are plenty of other tutoring services online that are better and more trustworthy - I 100% suggest going elsewhere whether you are a teacher or a student.”
