“The Cost of Overlooking Real Workers – Ace Burlington, WI
During my time as a cashier, I was more than just someone who rang up transactions—I built relationships with customers, made them feel valued, and went beyond my job description daily. Whether it was helping a struggling customer, looking out for the remodel crew, or creating a welcoming atmosphere that brought people back, I made an impact. And yet, management chose to dismiss that value.
I was denied basic breaks due to staffing shortages while others received preferential treatment. I witnessed a culture that encouraged complacency and protected incompetence while disregarding those who actually did the work. When I advocated for myself, I was met with condescension rather than appreciation.
Now, with two locations severely understaffed, I’m curious—who will step up? Who will bring the heart and dedication that I, and others like me, brought every single day?
I am a Military Veteran, honored with an Army Achievement Medal, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a NATO Medal. I am a graduate of Alverno College, multilingual, and have years of customer service and teaching experience. I am also someone who genuinely cares about people and the community. But despite all that, Ace Burlington would rather overlook real value to focus on people who do not contribute where it matters most—inside the stores, connecting with the communities that keep Ace alive.
Ace prides itself on being "The Helpful Place," but when management fails to respect and retain its best employees, what kind of help is actually being provided? I hope corporate starts paying closer attention before more dedicated, hardworking employees walk out the door—taking the true magic of the store with them.

“Today, 2/21/25, I was in search of some specialty screws and Lowe's advised they could not assist me but that the Ace Hardware (Gavin's Ace Hardware - 16054) in Cape Coral, Florida had what I needed. I proceed to Ace and when I entered the store, I was met by a young man, an Ace employee named Marc. Mark asked if he could be of assistance and I advised him of my predicament and showed him the electrical device that required specific screws in stainless steel. Marc walked me over to the hardware isle and with a careful, methodical, search located the screws, the washers and nuts needed to complete my installation. The search was rather tedious and it would have taken me an hour to locate what Marc located in about five-minutes. Marc had an exceptionally professional demeanor, was funny and helpful. I wanted to commend Marc for a job well done and for taking pride in his job and service to his customer.”

“The ACE Hardware store deliberately places an offer for goods that are not actually available for sale. This deal is placed to attract customers who will buy something else in addition to this product. Then the sale of the offer is unilaterally cancelled by the store. My online order # 54457153-54457463 was cancelled without apology or compensation. Before that, I went to the store twice after receiving a letter that the goods were in stock. The store is quite far from me. And there they told me that such goods were not available. This is a deliberate action of the store, which deceives customers. I think that such stores are not needed at all. Large retail chains like Home Depot or Lowe's are enough. The range of goods there is sufficient. And they act honestly with customers. ACE Hardware stores should soon disappear with such an attitude to business and customers. I will never buy anything from ACE Hardware again and I recommend everyone else not to do business with them.”

“I called before I came and asked if you carried deer corn. I called Tractor Supply and Atwoods. They only sell the deer corn in 40 lb bags. Your store told me you had 5lb and 10 lb bags. I was so happy because I don't need very much. I went to your store on Aspen. I asked where the deer corn was located. Politely, the lady at cash register said, I'm sorry, we do not carry it. I said will you please check with your manager. She did. The manager said they did not have it.
I said,
Someone in this store lied to me! Someone lied to me to get me in the front door. I know this sales tactic and I don't appreciate it.
That is what went wrong.”

“Purchased new Weber grill. Had Ace Hardware assemble and delivere. Grill has not worked correctly since it was delivered to my home. Ace staff tell me to call Weber, Ace will not provide any assistance with the problem.”
“I just went to buy a plastic sheer to cut a small piece of plastic and the guy sold me pliers saying it would be cheaper and easy since I only needed this for one job. Yes I’m dumb for listening and buying it but I figured he works there he knows. I’m cussing out the neighbors bcuz it isn’t doing squat but bending the plastic”

Placed the order and it said ready for pick up in 15 minutes, I'm 20 minutes away so I left for ACE to pick up my order. When I got there I did some additional shopping at the check out they told me my order was canceled. I ordered 3 different items and because 1 of them was not available they cancelled the entire order. Two of the items where there so I tried to purchase them with other items I picked up while shopping but could not use the $5 off coupon with $30 purchase because it was used for the online order, the cashier gave me a number to call to get it re-instated but when I called they told me it would take 72 hours to get the $5.00 coupon back. I'm very unhappy with ACE hardware and will be doing more business with TRUE VALUE.
Why even have a web site if the items you say will be ready are not there. I always check to make sure the items say ready for pick up in 15 minutes.”
“Cancelled half my order and never issued a refund on the cancelled items. I've called customer service 5 times and they tell me they have a "team" working on it. Why does it take a team of people weeks to do a refund on something they never shipped? Can they not perform basic retail practices?”
