Very easy to use and install. I have a healthy score despite making one of two minor braking errors, and even if it does occasionally make a mistake (as others have noted) if you don't drive like a lunatic in time the score adjusts back up quite quickly. I assume speeding only kicks in if you go above 70mph - haven't gone out of town yet...

As of yet ive not had many problems , i do think that they want you to cause an accident by driving slow eeverywhere , ive now installed another drivescore app to compare with hastings if a time comes that they mess me about , im a hgv driver so this registers me all day everyday so i should have a conflicting case if they try to play the game

Been with smart miles for just over 6 months and honestly think it’s great value for your money. I’m seeing all these negative reviews on here but everything’s been fine with me, I was in contact with them last week and the customer service was great and friendly. Only thing I do have to agree on is that acceleration score is low for me even though I’m very careful. Overall great value for money especially for a first time driver who can’t afford 2k for insurance. I’m excited to see my quote for next year.

Used for 3 years, although a few hiccups on their side about blackbox readings, everything was rectified and helped save a lot of money on insurance.

A couple of months in and fine so far. It seems worth the hassle for significantly cheaper insurance and I'm pleased that it makes me observe the speed limit 100% of the time - tricky at first but now it's just habit. It was the only vaguely affordable way to insure my daughter on my car so unfortunately it lumps both of us together as one driver even though I am the main user and have been driving for 25 years. We're losing more points than I expected on accelerating but maybe that's fair feedback. I'd like more info about how this is measured though as I suspect it is related to how/when I am changing gear rather than actual acceleration. The 10pm curfew is a bit on the early side and we lose around 5/100 points each time we travel after 10 although we get them back over time - I would avoid getting this insurance if you know you regularly have to drive after 10pm. I personally think they should change this to 11pm to cater for people who work and have a social life!

We had just finished our first year with a score of 91. The black box has worked well for my 18 year old daughter if you drive within the speed limits, don’t slam the brakes on & not too mad with the acceleration the scores stay high. My only gripe is the 10 night time curfew as she finishes her part time job at 11 as with most students. The curfew would work better for 12 till 6. They were by far the better price very happy with the renewal which has halved from last year they really do reward safe drivers.

I’m quite confused about these reviews, I have had my black box for 3 months now after taking up the policy immediately after I’d passed my test, I find the app easy to use and feel the scoring system is fare, my score has never dropped below 85, and can occasionally be as high as 91. The only problem I have with the policy is the time of day and braking section, I feel many teenagers (like myself) have part time jobs at bars etc which involves shifts finishing past 10pm this makes the curfew very unfair and can kill your score badly when your driving is safe. The braking score i feel is too harsh, you can’t help braking harshly sometimes and I feel sometimes it’s made me dangerous as I’m reluctant to slam the brakes on in emergencies as I don’t want to damage my score. My speed and acceleration scores have never dropped below 100 as I have stuck to the speed limits (it’s not hard) my time of day score is 75 after driving back from work every other week and my braking score is 65 (I feel I rarely harshly brake and when I do my score plummets down and is hard to get back up) my overall score is 88 and I’m set for the biggest discount at renewal. I feel these reviews give a biased representative of the policy, I feel only people who have had problems have reviewed it which means it looks awful when it really isn’t, for the price there’s no point going anywhere else, it’s a year with the black box then I can renew without one ore I can switch companies if they refuse to remove it as I would have built a years no claims discount + a years experience

Hi there, Thank you for your honest review. We are really pleased that you find the app easy to use and that you feel the scoring system is fair. I have passed your feedback on to the SmartMiles team with regards to the 10pm curfew and also regarding feeling reluctant to brake in emergency brake situations because of not wanting to drop your driving behavioral score, which has sometimes made you feel dangerous. Our SmartMiles team are more than happy to discuss tips for improving your driving behavioral score if ever you would like to talk about this with the team. The SmartMiles team can be contacted on 01733 308 380. ~ Amber ~ Amber ~ Amber

My son has been with hastings about three months and the black box is absolute rubbish! Getting score up is impossible! The black box does not pick up his breaking unless he has had to break sharp due to another driver. He’s tried everything to get high score but now they are saying they are cancelling insurance!! He has called many times and all he gets told is try and get score up! How??? It doesnt work!!! Now he has 7 days till cancellation and got to pay hastings when its them cancelling!!! Worst company ever for customer service! Plus now they are cancelling insurance his insurance with another company will double! Hastings seriously sort out the black boxes you supply because direct line boxes work perfectly and customer service is far better!!!!

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and I am sorry that you feel you've had a negative experience with us. We would have contacted your son with an initial pre warning letter when his score dropped below 40. After this we would have given him the opportunity to lift his score above 40 and the first warning would only have been issued if he didn't increase his score after either 50 miles of driving or 5 journeys. Failing to do so, we would then have issued your son with a second warning only after 200 miles worth of driving. If your son didn't increase his score in the 7 days after his second warning was issued, only then would we look to cancel his policy. We are sorry to lose your son as a customer but ultimately black box policies are based on driving behavioral scores. ~ Amber

I haven’t went over the speed limit once and I’ve had box 4 months and my “speed” is sitting on 90? Could you tell me why please? Is there any chance I could work to get that back to 100?

Hi Wesley, Thanks for your review. It may be that your speed slightly too high on a road which was unfamiliar to yourself. The SmartMiles team are able to look at this for you and see where you went over the speed limit to give you some clarification on the situation, however if you continue to follow the road signs your speed score will increase. ~ Harriot

no hiccups or problems after a year, the only thing i would say is that the black box is ridiculous, one slip up thats it and your driving score will go down. However, no matter how good you drive or no matter how long you do it for the score never seems to redeem itself! this needs sorting and its not like it isnt noticeable...

It was an amazing experience to insure my car with SmartMiles. But what could be improved is that if customers are not limited to certain mileage. And to reduce the insurance cost even thought there was limitations.can you please not take money without informing the customers.

Box fitted by young pleasant young man, Only been 1 week so far highly satisfied as it truly reflects my driving ability, as an ex. Driving instructor 100% Braking / 100% Accelerating / 100% Speed / 15% Time of day. I felt this was very harsh for one trip on the 16 Nov 2018 at 22:07 which took 11m 8s, over a distance of 2.81 miles. Felt like giving a 1 star review, but did not want to be as mean as Hastings, for such a minor fault. Overall driving score 80. The time of day rating seriously needs to be changed.
