About Headstrong Counselling:

At Headstrong Counselling, we embody a vision that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of counselling and psychotherapy. Rooted in social justice and evidence-based practice, our mission is to democratise access to high-quality counselling for every member of our community. We firmly believe that everyone, irrespective of their racial identity, income level, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation, deserves the right to quality mental health support.
We recognise that addressing the community's mental health support deficit is not merely a service but a fundamental necessity. To this end, our commitment is two-fold: First, we strive to provide low-cost, yet high-quality counselling sessions, ensuring that essential mental health support is not a privilege but a right accessible to all. .
Second, we are dedicated to fostering a counsellor base that mirrors the diversity and richness of our community. Through rigorous clinical supervision, ongoing professional development, specialised workshops, and inclusion and diversity training, we ensure that our therapists are not only skilled clinicians but also culturally competent and socially conscious practitioners.
At the heart of our ethos lies the conviction that a sustainable and quality mental health service should not be reliant on external funding, grants, or governmental resources. We are committed to creating a self-sustaining model that flourishes independently, ensuring uninterrupted and reliable support to those we serve.

Headstrong started out amazing. I had an excellent initial conversation with a wonderful, empathetic and kind counsellor who asked me loads of questions, got my profile sorted and also gave me some helpful tips to manage my issues in the 3-5 weeks it would take to get me allocated to a counsellor. I did choose the "trainee" counsellor route, as I simply can't afford someone more qualified, and I don't really know what I expected but I guess someone who potentially wasn't as fresh/new. I felt that my counsellor didn't listen to the stuff I was saying, he asked me the same questions as the initial questionnaire asked me and I had to go over everything all over again. He spent the first 25 minutes of our 50 minute session talking about his qualifications, which I understand may be mandatory, but surely doesn't need to take that long and felt like I paid for no help. He also laughed at me during one of my disclosures and said "ah, that sounds complex doesn't it" - what am I supposed to say to that? There were lots of pauses, lots of times I was asked to wait whilst he wrote stuff down and just felt like my 50 min session were 30 mins due to the time it took to go over the last session and the pace at which he was speaking. I had a few sessions and we got absolutley no where, just kept going over the same points and questions over and over again with no assistance to my actual reasonings for behind there. I do think Headstrong is an amazing concept, with really accesible counsellors on hand for lower income people who need help. I just think that I should have the opportunity to invest in a more experienced person without it costing so much more. I would look to come again, but maybe once I get a pay rise so I can have a different person.

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - while I am glad that your assessment was a positive experience, I'm truly sorry that you had this experience with your counsellor and that you felt like you had paid to receive no help. This is absolutely not the service we pride ourselves on providing, and is not the kind of support, or response, that we would expect one of our counsellors - a trainee or otherwise - to offer to any client. We take all feedback seriously and this will help us to improve our service for future clients - only by recognising where there are problems can we truly grow as an organisation. While the majority of the counsellor at our low-cost service are trainees on placement, they still come with a broad array of experience and at different stages of training. If you would be willing to try our service again then we would happily give you the chance to work with a more experienced counsellor as you have mentioned here, without it needing to cost any more - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. In any instances where someone feels there is an issue with the support being provided by your counsellor, we ask that they contact our assessments team in order to discuss the issue and to explore next steps. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for your experience with your previous counsellor. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a more experienced counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

I really enjoyed my Headstrong Counselling at the start, it was a great introduction to counselling and my counsellor was really personable and nice. However, as time went on I felt I wasn't getting what I needed out of the sessions. I wanted to unpack and analyse my thought patterns but would often have sessions focused around CBT and coping mechanism, which wasn't really what I was after. I tried to prompt the sessions to talk in more details about the Why but my counsellor didn't seem to want to venture down that route so I follower her lead as opposed to fighting for what would be most worthwhile - but having never had counselling before I wasn't sure what the process was. Sessions became more a chore with me trying to think about things to talk about. I felt at times that she didn't know what to say and I understand they are in training but it wasn't very comfortable for me to navigate as I felt like she wasn't sure and didn't know of I was the one who had said too much. Counsellor also double booked and forgot multiple times, so a mixed experience.

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - I am grateful that you have shared your feedback here - this will help us to improve our service for future clients, and to ensure we can continue to grow and provide the best possible support for those who need it. I'm glad to hear that your therapy started off well and that you had a positive experience at the beginning of the process. However I am sincerely sorry to hear that you felt that therapy became a chore and that you weren't able to focus on what felt worthwhile for you to explore during your time in therapy due to what sounds like a mismatch with your counsellor. On top of that, having multiple sessions missed or double-booked by your counsellor is unacceptable and not at all the service we pride ourselves on providing. While the majority of the counsellor at our low-cost service are trainees on placement, we can offer a broad variety of therapeutic approaches with different counsellors - if you find that your first match doesn't quite fit. If you would be willing to try our service again then we would gladly discuss this further with you to match you with a counsellor whose approach and experience would better fit your needs - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. In any instances where someone feels there is an issue with the support being provided by your counsellor, we ask that they contact our assessments team in order to discuss the issue and to explore next steps. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for the negative experiences you've shared here. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a different counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

I have mixed feelings regarding my experience with Headstrong. While the sessions are affordable on a sliding scale based on earnings, I found that it was quite easy to tell that the counselor is in training. Indeed, I found my counselor to be quite nervous and uneasy which made some moment of the sessions a bit awkward. Additionally, I believe the payment system could be improved with direct withdrawals from accounts instead of a payment link sent.

I appreciate Headstrong and it is value for money. I felt I had a safe space to share personal information. My counsellor was approachable and kind. I felt opportunities were missed and was wanting them to ’dig deeper’ to unpack issues.
