About Headstrong Counselling:

At Headstrong Counselling, we embody a vision that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of counselling and psychotherapy. Rooted in social justice and evidence-based practice, our mission is to democratise access to high-quality counselling for every member of our community. We firmly believe that everyone, irrespective of their racial identity, income level, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation, deserves the right to quality mental health support.
We recognise that addressing the community's mental health support deficit is not merely a service but a fundamental necessity. To this end, our commitment is two-fold: First, we strive to provide low-cost, yet high-quality counselling sessions, ensuring that essential mental health support is not a privilege but a right accessible to all. .
Second, we are dedicated to fostering a counsellor base that mirrors the diversity and richness of our community. Through rigorous clinical supervision, ongoing professional development, specialised workshops, and inclusion and diversity training, we ensure that our therapists are not only skilled clinicians but also culturally competent and socially conscious practitioners.
At the heart of our ethos lies the conviction that a sustainable and quality mental health service should not be reliant on external funding, grants, or governmental resources. We are committed to creating a self-sustaining model that flourishes independently, ensuring uninterrupted and reliable support to those we serve.

Superb support on offer that was at a price I could afford, otherwise I would have missed out. Headstrong have helped me, changed my life by helping me work through stuff I couldn’t do alone. I cannot recommend them enough.

Headstrong was the perfect option as someone totally new to counselling. I find it super valuable - my counseller helped me through a really tough period and makes me feel comfortable and safe.

Headstrong is an affordable and very effective service. I am so pleased with how my sessions went and I had the most amazing therapist who I miss talking to dearly.

Headstrong provides a great service to individuals who would otherwise be unable to access help privately due to their exorbitant fees or through the NHS due to their long wait times. I found Headstrong was always there for me with caring mental health practitioners whenever I desperately needed someone to talk to - a service that should not be underestimated - for some the difference between choosing life or death.

The initial consultation was really good, I felt very heard and understood and the lady described back to me exactly what I said I was looking for in a therapist . But then the actual therapist themselves was nothing like I asked for.

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - while I am glad that your assessment was a positive experience, I'm truly sorry that the counsellor you were matched with did not meet your expectations or the person you described during your assessment. We pride ourselves on taking time and care to match clients with the right counsellor, and this is absolutely not what we would expect of our allocations process. While it is natural that not all clients and counsellors will form the right connection, we still aim to do everything we can to match you with the person who fits your preferences, while also having the right experience and availability to support you. If you would be willing to try our service again then we would happily discuss this with you further and look to match you with a counsellor who better fit your needs - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. In any instances where someone feels there is an issue with the counsellor they have been matched with, we ask that they contact our assessments team in order to discuss the issue and to explore next steps. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for your experience with our allocations process. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a more experienced counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

Headstrong started out amazing. I had an excellent initial conversation with a wonderful, empathetic and kind counsellor who asked me loads of questions, got my profile sorted and also gave me some helpful tips to manage my issues in the 3-5 weeks it would take to get me allocated to a counsellor. I did choose the "trainee" counsellor route, as I simply can't afford someone more qualified, and I don't really know what I expected but I guess someone who potentially wasn't as fresh/new. I felt that my counsellor didn't listen to the stuff I was saying, he asked me the same questions as the initial questionnaire asked me and I had to go over everything all over again. He spent the first 25 minutes of our 50 minute session talking about his qualifications, which I understand may be mandatory, but surely doesn't need to take that long and felt like I paid for no help. He also laughed at me during one of my disclosures and said "ah, that sounds complex doesn't it" - what am I supposed to say to that? There were lots of pauses, lots of times I was asked to wait whilst he wrote stuff down and just felt like my 50 min session were 30 mins due to the time it took to go over the last session and the pace at which he was speaking. I had a few sessions and we got absolutley no where, just kept going over the same points and questions over and over again with no assistance to my actual reasonings for behind there. I do think Headstrong is an amazing concept, with really accesible counsellors on hand for lower income people who need help. I just think that I should have the opportunity to invest in a more experienced person without it costing so much more. I would look to come again, but maybe once I get a pay rise so I can have a different person.

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with our services here - while I am glad that your assessment was a positive experience, I'm truly sorry that you had this experience with your counsellor and that you felt like you had paid to receive no help. This is absolutely not the service we pride ourselves on providing, and is not the kind of support, or response, that we would expect one of our counsellors - a trainee or otherwise - to offer to any client. We take all feedback seriously and this will help us to improve our service for future clients - only by recognising where there are problems can we truly grow as an organisation. While the majority of the counsellor at our low-cost service are trainees on placement, they still come with a broad array of experience and at different stages of training. If you would be willing to try our service again then we would happily give you the chance to work with a more experienced counsellor as you have mentioned here, without it needing to cost any more - please email us at assessments@headstrongcounselling.co.uk if you would be interested in this. In any instances where someone feels there is an issue with the support being provided by your counsellor, we ask that they contact our assessments team in order to discuss the issue and to explore next steps. Whether you would like to try our services again or not, thank you again for your feedback here and our sincerest apologies for your experience with your previous counsellor. We hope to hear from you soon, if you would like to try again with a more experienced counsellor. All the best, Daniel Johnstone Service Manager Headstrong Counselling

I have reached out to Headstrong on 3 different occasions and never been disappointed. Therapists are very professional and make you feel safe and heard. It’s a great initiative specially if you can’t afford expensive therapy and is just as good. I recommended it to a few of my friends

Completely different experience from counselling I had experienced. So helpful at encouraging and developing positive thinking. Great space to share thoughts and free up head space thereby creating a calmer existence.

it was no fault of my councellor, i am of an anxious disposition and the way to end or switch my therapist was way too much for me at that point. i went into shutdown and ignored which of course isnt the fault of headstrong but and inability for an unccomfortable out definitely cause some unnecessary stress. No shade at all on the therapist btw, im sure he would have been great for the right person, im issues feel more tightly knit due to un uptight or reserved upbrigning and i cant imagine many of your other clients arent the same. But again, my guy was great, i just couldnt handle it as presented, i think i may do better in future.

Thanks to Headstrong I was able to afford therapy. I had two amazing counsellors to which I own my sanity. Therapy was the best gift I could give myself. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all involved in the organisation’s success. People like me need you!

Easy and super accessible. I was paired with a lovely counsellor who took the time to listen. It was great to just be able to open my laptop and get the support in the comfort of my own home.

Though I am unsure how much I benefited from my sessions, I was very grateful to receive low cost counselling sessions. I was slightly surprised to have had no contact or follow up after my decision to finish sessions - I was told I would receive an email and confirmation. I think that ending process should be ironed out slightly better.
