I am almost always a solid medium, so I ordered the medium for myself and the large for my daughter who is a similar size but likes things big and roomie. I ended up exchanging the large for a small which fits me better, and my daughter took the medium. All this to say as a medium in most shirts, I am most comfortable in a small.
