“I would like to file a complaint about an employee at the Cato store in Pocomoke, MD. The employee's sales number is 105.on july 22
When I shop in your store, this employee makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. When I look at the jewelry or clothing, she stands nearby staring at me as if she thinks I'm going to steal something. If I move to another section of the store, she follows me and continues watching me.
What makes this especially upsetting is that while she is watching me, white customers are shopping freely without receiving the same treatment or attention. From my experience, it feels like I am being singled out because of my skin color.
I have always enjoyed shopping at Cato and have been a loyal customer, which is why this is so disappointing. No customer should feel profiled or made to feel like a criminal simply because of their race or skin tone.
Cato should hire and train employees to treat all customers with respect and equally. Racial profiling is unacceptable, rude, and offensive.
I could easily share this with hair face my experience on social media, but I would rather give Cato the opportunity to address this issue first because I genuinely like your store. I hope you will investigate this matter and ensure that all customers are treated fairly and with dignity. Unless your shop is is for specfuc person you let us know so we can spent our .oneh somware elsr”
“I stopped shopping at Cato Fashion and will never shop there again. I was looking trying decide what to purchase. When I went to check out the Manager tried to search and look in my purse. This happened several years ago and I have never stepped foot in the store or any other Cato's again. The thing is I purchased several hundred dollars worth of clothing that day and filled out a card application. Really does that sound like a shoplifter?? I work at a pharmacy and have worked retail jobs most of my adult life. I would give it 0 stars if I could.”
“I placed an order on july 7th. I got an email telling me it was shipped the same day and had left a facility in Georgia. 8 days later there has been no update. The tracking number I was given says it is not a good number and also there is no package found. I contacted customer service at the provided number and have been given the run around for 2 days. Today I was told to contact a different customer service presumably to only receive another round of lip service. Do not order from Catos! They have gone way done in quality and service.”
“I was at the store and the workers were extremely rude. The employee was at the cash register and I was ready to check out, and she just looks at me and walks away without saying anything. I stood there waiting for her to return and I looked for her and she was gossiping about me with her co worker.”
“I just went into the Paducah KY store on Irvin Cobb Dr. No one bothered to greet me or even acknowledge me. They were too busy gossiping about another employee. When I was checking out the two employees were too busy talking to each other to speak to me. Very rude. First time this has ever happened in a Cato's store to me. Usually everyone is so welcoming and pleasant.”
“My experience was one of utter disbelief. A young girl with black hair in a messy bun was not only being disrespectful to customers but also to the lady ringing me up. I know the lady running the register is a manager and knows how to do her job. The girl was butting in at everything she was doing and saying to me. To the point the manager had to tell her to step away. To which she replied no and rolled her eyes. The manager apologized to me for the behavior and I assured her I understood her aggravation at the girls behaviour. This isn't the first time I've witnessed this attitude from the same girl. She is condescending to customers and acts like she is the only person in the store who can do anything.”
“Try to return an item that I purchased. The sale clerk act like she was doing me a favor.I had the tag for the shoes there wasn’t a tag on the bottom of the shoe try to accused me of removing it. This is a long story all I know is I’ll never shop at Catos again”
“Cato s in Hendersonville TN Sunday 2/22 a short hair dark head lady waited on my friend and I . Hello...... no response ..... no need to say more. not friendly which made her very unprofessional and there wasn't even a conversation through two transaction so maybe she should go home or not coming to work when she's not in the best mood to have customer service. I don't think I wanna be a Cato's customer anymore I haven't even been thinking about sending my credit card back. We must've checked her off since she had to leave the floor and come walk the register we're not sure but I'm not gonna be treated that way. Good luck”
“I visited the Sumter, SC store on February 7, 2026 at 9 a.m. Purchased pants, asked to be put on hanger instead of bag to avoid getting wrinkle. She sad she couldn’t give me pant hanger, but a shirt hanger. She tried but it kept falling off. Then she going say, “I can’t stand here all day with this.” I
Just thought that was rude to say to me. So I took and tried and just put over my
Arms. She walked off and didn’t even say thank you. I never go back to that store again!”
“My husband went to return a blouse for me; he had the receipt. The sales clerk took the item to the backroom, where the manager was. When she came back out she told him that if it was within 30 days the only thing they could do was return the item for the lowest price it has been marked. He asked, "Even with a receipt?" She said, 'Yes, that's store policy." He asked if that was what the receipt said. At that point he said he'd just let me come back and complete the return. As he was walking out of the store he read the receipt. It actually said that we had until January 25, 2026 because we had purchased over the holiday season. He turned around and called back to her (she was back in the storeroom) and said, "I'm going to ask you to honor what the receipt says." She took the receipt and looked at it for about a minute and he said, "Can you see where it says that?" She snapped at him and said, "You don't have to be rude about it. if you're rude, I can ask you to leave the store. He said he wasn't being rude that perhaps she was being rude by telling him something inaccurate and getting upset when he asked them to honor it. The manager then came out and gave him the refund but he did not say a word. I don't think I'll be shopping there even though I do like the clothes. It's not worth being treated like that. Quincy, Illinois store #01211”
“I went to the Cato in Roxboro nc with my daughter we are here from out of town she purchased a nice formal dress the lady just threw it in the bag I went back in and was told that she would lay it in a layaway garment bag but we couldn’t have a hanger. She said she has to keep her hangers. If it wasn’t an emergency I would have left it.”
“Staff ignored my arrival, never asked if I. needed anything . Seemed to be bothered that I was even there. Asked if the dressing rooms were locked, waited a while for the clerk to show up. Bought several items and ignored my request for an emailed receipt. Worst experience I’ve ever had at a Catos. Customer service is a skill set this team doesn’t appear to have. Wont ever visit the the Ambassador Caffery Store again.”
“Can all of you people please stop calling the store “Cato’s”. It is Cato. There is no s. It’s very basic grammar. Also, stop complaining about technical stuff that the employees have no control over. ( i.e. marking the bills then having to hold them up to the light) Get over it; it’s part of the company’s policy, not a way to criminalize a customer. Also, employees are 98% of the time not just messing with clothes on racks to watch what you are doing! That is in your head. It is part of their job to put back/fix clothes on racks after lazy customers decide to just throw them on top of other thing or leave them on the floor. Customers are not always in the right. And no..I do not work for CATO.”
“Your "pay by phone" system is very outdated. It takes over 7 minutes to complete the payment by phone. You first get an automated message. Then it transfers you to a live person only to transfer you back to an automated recording. It's ridiculous.”
“Went into the Store on Bobby Jones Expressway Augusta on 7/26/25 Sales Associate was counting down the register. She wasn’t friendly at all.
I will continue to order online. Very poor customer service. Nasty Attitude”
“I have visited my local Cato in Minden LA and was not acknowledged either time as even being in the store; unrecognized whatsoever by either employee present. Poor customer service!”
“For the last 3 years I have received a gift card for Cato's from my son. I understand that they are financially strapped. When I went to the store in Callaway Florida they told me that their gift card system has been down all week. I called the corporate office and they have no resolution. This is crazy. I think purposely holding the funds because their financially tight. You mean to tell me in our entire week's time there is no resolution to all of the other moms who may have gotten a gift card from Mother's Day. And I spent an hour picking up my clothing just to be told that I couldn't use it. They need to post that on the door before people waste all day looking for clothing. I don't believe that the gift card system is down.
Never again. Going forward I will tell my son to not include Cato in my gift cards from Mother's Day.”
