“I was having a hard time affording a board, so I looked for a used board on reddit. Chessup support found me and offered me an opened box board at a discount, out of nowhere. The support has been so friendly, and incredibly professional. I am down right amazed as the level of service the chessup company has shown.”
“Super well executed. I've been playing chess since I was a child, but I've found it hard to teach others because of the complexity. ChessUp accelerates a huge hurdle to learning Chess, which is the movement of each individual type of piece. Super clever and well executed”
“A decent quality board, gets out of sync easily and the app doesn't work very well. Considering the app drives the experience it really is limited to how well it works. Has potential but until they improve the app and online experience it is just an expensive board that you can play the computer with”
“Chessup. So far so good, I love that it's getting my wife and kids interested. The handicap option evens the playing field. It's somewhat glitchy at times, but has never prevented a game from finishing. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars. It isn't flawless, but technology rarely is. Would highly recommend for a beginner or someone wanting to introduce others to the game. I wish I had this to learn on.”
“I’d love to give 5 stars but after o my several months of ownership and a few dozen games, the mere Re broken spaces that don’t turn light off when correct piece is placed or it will flicker on off under the piece while other potential moves not involving that piece are lit up. Very disappointing. I hope you will address this. I did the troubleshooting steps and cali rated the board after clearing etc.”
“It works as advertised. I haven't experienced anything close to resembling a bug in their chess system. That's what it is. A systematic approach to improving your chess game. This board hasn't left my coffee table since I received it two weeks ago.”
“I bought the ChessUp board, bags, and phone holder. Everything has been pretty great so far. The kids and I have played nearly 300 games on the board so far. We have played the ai up to lvl 16, played each other, played online games on chess.com, and even had the ai play itself. There have been a few bugs/issues along the way but nothing major. Most of them have gone away as we have figured things out. I posted a bug regarding chess.com play as black and it was patched pretty quickly. It’s been a great motivator and made chess feel more accessible for the kids. I will say that I have found the assist mode to be hit or miss with suggested move quality. But there are settings I can tinker with to see if it helps. Overall, really happy I got it despite the additional cost as compared to chessnut or others like it.”
“My wife got me the board as a birthday present and I really love the ability to play an AI on a physical board as well as many of the existing assisting features but I feel like there could be so much more added to it and hope to see it advance in the future! A few ideas from just having it for a week -
1. The number one thing I want from this board is to improve my chess game and one way I was hoping to do that was through teaching me the best ways to learn chess openings. I know the most common openings are stored in the board but I think it would be such a huge perk if I could select from a dropdown or input which opening I want to execute in the app and then have the board guide me through the best ways to get those setups done and what to do when those openings are challenged in unexpected ways.
2. I'd love to just have a "Custom Board" selection in the app where I can set up the pieces how I want and then export it to the board in one click. Right now, the FEN string works but for someone who has never used that before, it's super painful to figure out every time.
There are other small tweaks I'd want to see but those two are the biggest things I feel like would benefit the user right now and don't think it would be crazy hard to implement with the app. Overall though, the board is great and I'm looking forward to it really becoming a one-stop shop for players trying to improve in the future!”
“ChessUp is great! My 7-year-old nephew loves learning to play and it allows us to have a good game together with the different assistance levels. My only wish is that it had a mode where I could turn off available moves on my end while keeping the assistance on his. But that is a minor thing. Overall, this is an amazing board that will get lots of use!”
“i like it but there is a glitch on the app. sometimes when i choose i piece to move i can make an illegal move. Also integrating chessable's move trainer into it to train openings would be useful. overall a quality product”
“The quality of the board is very good. The software is still under development but you can see the progress. They also added chess.com beta and it looks fantastic.
For multiplayer on lichess its mostly bug-free.(rare bugs here)
The AI without a smartphone isn't that good. I also encountered bugs when playing OTB.
If you want a board that looks great and feels very futuristic and your main Goal is to play online then its perfect for you!
Im very excited what new Features we will get in the Future.
Whats also important: Customer service is great.”
“My daughter and I love it. It's a lot of fun and seems to be working well. Even though we have very different ratings, we can play an even match with the assistance feature. For online play, I use Lichess with android. I haven't had any problems with it. The app seems to be bare bones right now, but I'm hoping it will be improved in the future. The pieces are comfortable with a nice weight to them. The physical product is great and I would highly recommend it.”
