“A disgrace for the country, a disgrace for common people, a disgrace for customers. Had a white BMW 530 D through them that started having issues , for more than 3 months they driven me nuts , I had to take days off from work , spent a nearly £2000 , they passed me from one department to another, they broke their own agreement rules by lying that wear and tear is not down to them . The most disturbing, disgusting and dangerous company I came across and I had cars on lease for over 10 years but Close Brothers are nothing less than “ stay away people , please , for your own good “. Now they avoiding covering the costs I lost , they want money for excess miles , they ignoring they’re doing to my personal life and mental health, they just ignoring everything, they act like they did nothing and expect money from you . “Since 2023 – Faulty Vans, Thousands in Extra Costs, and Still No Resolution
I run a small business and in 2023 I entered into a finance agreement with Close Brothers through Vanaways for two brand‑new Maxus Deliver 9 vehicles. From the start it has been a nightmare.
Both vans arrived late and already damaged on the front bumpers and doors. Within weeks, one van developed a clutch and gearbox fault, went into the garage for repair, came out, and then blew its gearbox again. That van was off the road for around four months. The second van later developed the same gearbox fault. I was actually told to keep driving it until it failed — I refused to risk my team’s safety.
Courtesy vehicles were only provided for the final nine weeks of that downtime. For the rest of the time, I had no choice but to hire vans at my own cost just to keep my business running. Between finance payments of £700+ VAT per van and hire costs of over £2,000 a month, I’ve been forced to pay thousands on top of a finance agreement for vehicles I cannot use.
I formally rejected the vans in May 2024, but over a year later Close Brothers is still taking payments. This dispute has now dragged on for well over a year, during which time I’ve been passed from person to person with no real resolution.
The only “solution” offered was via Vanaways — to hand the faulty vans back and start a brand‑new finance deal for replacements, with no refund of all the payments I’d already made. In plain terms, I would be paying twice, while Close Brothers and Vanaways protected their profits.
This has nearly folded my company. I’ve carried the entire financial hit, while Close Brothers and Vanaways continue to be paid. If you’re reading this thinking about applying for finance with Close Brothers or Vanaways to help your small company: don’t. Because if problems arise, Close Brothers will always protect its partners and brokers — and leave the small business owner to carry the cost.”

“Rang Close Brothers telephone number 03333216060 as there is no other number. The call centre in Africa pick it up, there English isn't very good. I spoke with Fatima explaining that there was a Direct Debit going out and I needed to cancel it. She couldn't find my file and hung up. I rang again and another woman picked up this time with the same result. There is no chat service and the customer service department is useless as I kept going round in circles. I've now emailed and will wait to see the reply. Customer service is meant to help customers not ignore them !!!

“I returned a faulty car financed through Close Brothers. They refunded only the deposit and refused to return the rest of the finance payments – even though the car was later sold at auction.
They claimed the complaint was resolved but never sent a Final Response Letter, blaming an “office error.” My husband has cancer, and we care for a disabled child. We informed their solicitor, but the company offered no compassion or resolution.
The case is now in court. This has been an exhausting and distressing experience. Not recommended.”

“I have spoken to Sheilon about my complaint case.
I felt so bad talking to her i called so many time but she was always busy and I been told she will call me back but she never called back.
After so many time trying to talk to her as she was handling my case she said to me you are not the only customer I have to deal with so don’t call me back.
When she will have time she will go through my case and will let me know further.
She was so rude after that she took longer than it should be to go through it what I asked for.
Very bad experience she need to know how to deal with customers.

I have had to raise a second complaint about the same issue and have had little to no response. The first complaint a few months ago was dealt with sufficiently however my recent encounter has been nothing but appalling. I have been a loyal customer for four years and I am now being ignored. “I Also had a broken car from the word go...engine issues throughtout from the start, which I spent the 4 years paying off to close brothers that was on finance through close brothers this whole experience ended up making my late father extremelly ill to the point that we couldnt cope in the end.
We were bombaded by Gary
for payments ... He called Daily endlessly, morning noon and evening to chase for charges and payments. Costing me everything in the end.
To the point that almost sent me over the edge.
It took over 4 years to pay for this broken car that was driven to threads after this time.
I hope that there will some at the end of the Tunnel with close brothers as I know that I may have a claim for extra charges...

“Financed a car for my elderly, disabled mother and it’s not road worthy, in fact it’s dangerous. Timing chain, head gasket and leaking oil all over the brakes and onto the engine and floor to name but a few issues. Had the car assessed at 2 garages and both have said it needs a complete engine rebuild and is not safe to drive.
Close brothers finance took 3 months to arrange with the dealer to have the car back to repair and it’s come back with more issues than it left with. The dealer is a very unpleasant man and clearly a con artist, his online reviews are absolutely dire, a finance company shouldn’t even be working with this “trader” at all.
Now the car is back and deemed dangerous close brothers are ignoring my elderly mothers calls at all costs and have offered no help at all. This car needs rejecting and a replacement found.
My next call is to trading standards and the financial ombudsman in regards to both close brothers and the original dealer to try and get this dealt with.”
