So my experience with Carrot didn't have the best of starts. You have to phone them up and arrange a black box to be installed which is fine but I was only offer 2 slots in a 14 day period, I wasn't sure I could make the first date and the second I had a funeral to go to but I took the first. I received a text the day before saying it would be in the afternoon which I wasn't able to do so phoned them to advise that was the case. After what felt like a little interrogation as to why I couldn't do it, I then had to make numerous phone calls to get an extension of driving without a box otherwise I would have the policy cancelled. Eventually I had it installed, they are very flexible with where they go to fix it and the engineer on the day was superb and was very quick with installing it. When I've had to speak on the phone, they do have a very annoying 'hold' system as you'd expect though most the staff I've spoken to are genuinely very nice and helpful. I am being bombarded with the same email about 'thank you for insuring, give us feedback' and 'top up miles' which is why I'm doing this review. What others have said about the app and usage score is try, I've found it does reflect my driving well and haven't been penalised for short trips (8-15 mins usually) though I was given a 2/10 for usage at 1am which is fair enough though it was to drive a family member to A&E and I ensured I was safe to drive. All in all fairly happy with Carrot, their app isn't that bad, it does show your scores and I'm on course to earn about £40 back each quarter which is nice. Make sure you do make a correct judgement with your annual mile expectancy though, I seem to have got it spot on with 3,000 but it would be costly if you need to top them up.

Extremely rude staff, especially the woman on the phone. They cancelled our policy only a matter of days after we had paid them, refused to fit the black box and also refused to pay back the money they had scammed us of. Avoid this company.

After being paid, three days later they sent a guy to our work to come and fit the black box. When he arrived after looking at the car for a while he then refused to fit the box as he claimed our Ford Fiesta Zetec was not a Ford Fiesta Zetec?! The company also insisted that we had modified the car and accused us of lying about what model the car was even though we showed them the log book and manual. The staff are all extremely rude, especially one woman in particular over the phone. We felt very threatened by this company as not only did THEY cancel the policy, they also refused to pay back any money even though they never fitted the box. Since then we have been insured elsewhere and I can assure you it was a FORD FIESTA ZETEC!! Please avoid this company at all costs, I believe it is just a scam and conning young drivers out of money. Very disappointing.

Long waiting times to contact Carrot, difficulties in arranging box fitting, dire administration services unable to co-ordinate information ending with cancellation of policy.

Cancellation of the policy my son has a policy of 9 months he had excellent scores Daily because he went over the speed limit by 2 mph they have cancelled the policy be careful a black box is a scam the money he now has to pay his a con .stay well away from a black box .

The black box is heavily unreliable, it marks you down on usage. I've had to call them multiple times to change things such as duplicate drives, when customer service we're confronted they said I can make smthat same drive twice at exactly the same time. Terrible app as well, wouldn't recommend to anyone as it's so unreliable.

Great for a cheap insurance however the 'useage' part of the app is all over then place, messing up my score, would recommend only to build your no claims and a cheap insurance for year 1.

Absolutely dreadful. Avoid at all costs. The scores on the app bear no relation to actual driving. I received negative scores on the app for usage, which lead to carrot threatening to cancel my policy. One of these scores was for driving someone to the airport (an hour journey there and an hour and a half on the way back because of a traffic jam) - journeys over two hours long lead to negative scores. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I'm not sure how being stuck in traffic was due to bad driving on my part. I also got negative usage scores for journeys that were apparently too short... It is seemingly impossible to use your car at all, without being threatened with policy cancellation if you are insured with carrot. Moreover, I got a negative score for a week, when my car was parked on the drive at my house and I was out of the country... Absolutely ridiculous. Why would they offer car insurance when they are so clearly opposed to the idea of people using their cars? Their app doesn't work, the scores it gives for driving bear no resemblance to reality. Their offer of free pizza as a reward is a lie. The only available reward is the chocolate, which you only find you've qualified for, once the offer has expired. Whenever I tried to call to get through to carrot I was never on hold for less than half an hour. On the day I cancelled my policy I spent a total of three hours on hold with them.

I got Carrot with black box because it was by far the cheapest option for me. I drive a small 1.2L car so am not really that capable of speeding anyways. Overall, it's been good. The Facebook page response time is fast and they always give complete responses. I've had to message about once a week as the technology is still a bit rudimentary and sometimes gets the speed limits wrong, but they always fix it straight away. The only suggestion I'd have is to definitely pick sufficient mileage otherwise you have to pay for it, the black box measures your miles so you can't go even a bit over. I just got my reward card (which is just a MasterCard you can use anywhere) and am starting to spend the money I got back which is brilliant. Definitely would recommend this to build up NCB and also if you drive well you can get listed for significant renewal discounts.

Cheapest car insurance on offer for me and app is useful very for keeping track of miles and rewards. The box has issues I didn't have with previous insurer and carrot penalises you for late driving without forewarning.

Very good for cheap insurance but the black box is an issue. I purposely chose a policy WITHOUT a curfew on it due to working funny hours over christmas ( early starts/ late finish ) and chose the option to have limited miles instead, knowing myself that i wasn't going to drive miles away in my first year. Yet on my dashboard on the app i'm going into the red and getting - points because i'm driving after 10/11 pm or before 6 am and being put down for the short journeys from work to my house.. ( around 2 miles.) also been told by other people that having your revs over 3000 could result in penalisation. has also put me down for excessive speeding when i know i haven't been.

awful insurance company, very unhelpful. My policy was the better driver policy where you use an app, the app was set up from day one but after 20 days they decided to cancel my policy saying the app was not used? very awful company wouldnt recommend it to anyone

There's a few bad things about about this insurance company, as I'm 18 I have to have a black box and the first engineer who came out to fit it refused to fit it as I have a sticker on my car, what a load of rubbish!!! Also on the dashboard it has a thing called usage which means I can't got to the shop on my lunch break because it will mark me downed a bad driver because it's a short trip, it's F**king ridiculous, don't use this insurer ever and if I could afford to change I would without a second thought , don't insure with carrot if you want to enjoy your car

Think the box is a good idea but don't like that the usage gives minus scores can't help working late and sometimes have to do short journeys otherwise teaches you to drive carefully
