Here follows my letter of complaint to Catawiki Customer Support. I am waiting for a reply. ( Their messaging system does not accept attached photos. I include photos of 3 out of the 4 suspect paintings here.) Dear...., I wish to bring to your attention an extremely serious matter, regarding two of Catawiki’s “PRO TOP” sellers, which I am sure will be of interest to you. These two sellers are: Ditta Caiazzo and Rosa. My suspicions were first aroused in 2020 when two years after my purchase of a painting, lot number 22018945 from Ditta Caiazzo, I removed the glass from the frame and found traces of paint which was still wet (!) adhering to the inside of the glass. Another painting from the same seller bought at around the same time and purporting to be by Giuseppe Aureli, lot no. 22408477, I recently find to be mere copy of a finer work. I decided to take works sold by Catawiki which claimed to be Giuseppe Aureli (1858-1929) as a sample and research them as being potential frauds. The two sellers, amongst others, which seem to be most guilty of criminal misrepresentation in this respect are the above-mentioned Ditta Caiazzo and Rosa. Here are some of the results, in chronological order, of my findings: 02.12.2018. Lot number 22408477. Ditta Caiazzo. Painting entitled Odalisca signed G . Aureli (this the painting I unfortunately bought) is a COPY of Fatima by Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911). See attachment 1. He was a successful artist in his own right. I refer you to an exhaustive and illustrated list of 184 original works by Aureli: http://www.artnet.com/artists/giuseppe-aureli/ None of the above Catawiki listings used the words “copy” or “after”, none of them mentioned the works’ original artist and all of them bear the words “Signed G. Aureli”. The descriptions neglect to say that the signatures are false. I repeat that the above examples are the results of research into works claiming to have been painted by only one artist. If in just one morning’s study I have found 4 clear examples of blatant fraud, I hate to think of how many others remain undetected. Probably dozens and dozens. My suspicion is that the Catawiki sellers, both Ditta Caiazzo and Rosa (perhaps in collusion?) have a ‘stable’ of artists who produce copies for sale on internet bearing false signatures which the unwary or gullible buyer will bid for. In the past I was myself amongst those incautious buyers. I am annoyed with myself, but also angry with Catawiki for allowing these situations to continue. Two “Pro, Top” sellers are obviously favoured clients at Catawiki: money-makers extraordinaire! But the Catawiki promise, “Experts you can count on” and Catawiki’s claim of “commitment to trust and safety” are apparently nothing but empty slogans. Such disregard of buyers’ interests, whether by negligence or design, infuriates me. I am considering taking further action regarding Ditta Caiazzo, Rosa and Catawiki, but await your exhaustive reply before making my decision. I wish to be informed of the action you take. Catawiki should have Caveat Emptor slapped on it in bold bright text as this is a site where buyer beware is apt. I’ve purchased a few items from the site and watched seller behaviour and some trends are worrying, especially where seller and fake buyer bids can inflate an auction. For example some anonymous bid names ramp up the price up to the reserve or expert’s level and step back. Classic manipulation. Unfortunately as all bidder names are anonymous it isn’t easy to identify culprits and Catawiki clearly isn’t policing this on their end. I’ve also seen some prints from world renowned artists regularly drip fed onto the site by expert sellers, these prints labelled as “rare” when clearly they aren’t if being listed once or twice a month just not concurrently. I’ve alerted Catawiki and they do nothing as it suits them to have traffic. So Buyer Beware, this site isn’t for the faint hearted. Yes you may find a deal but with 9% auction fee slapped on you would expect Catawiki to try much harder to make the site TRUSTWORTHY. I don’t trust the site, but I may still return to grab a bargain if I’m lucky.

Poor vetting of sellers and items. Over valued valuations. Poor customer service. Don't expect to get any of the paid commission/auction fees back when the seller doesn't deliver the item.

1Star is not deserved. Scammed over a painting, and still waiting for it to arrive. Disgraceful customer service from Catawiki and they still sell David Brush (Spanish Painter) paintings.

I spotted fake product, socalled damascus knives from Japan Damascus pattern is the result of folding steel, every knife is unique. when they offer a set with exact same pattern you know it is lasered. I explained to them, and they agreed, yet still there experts are allowing for these knives to be sold. seems quality assurance is difficult to maintain

What went right would be a shorter response. Wants payment immediately but no delivery and when you ask for assistance or to cancel order you receive a ling email with multiple reasons they can't help. When the actual seller doesn't respond you know you have a problem. Never use this website.

Chinese experts are complete "students" and noobs. They sell their own items there. They undervalue sellers items, to make a purchases after - clearly misleading and fraudulent actions. Stay away from this "crap" website and "crap" eggzperts. I think online fraud institutions should pay a close attention to this crapzzz website. Everyone is laughing on a internet in regars eggzperts knowledge.

I won a bid for four "vintage" wooden boxes. The parcel was delivered on Friday and I could only open it on Monday, due to national bank holidays. The boxes smell terribly musty and are infected and covered with mold inside. It's impossible to use them for storage, since they are unhealthy. The seller didn't respond to my complaint messages, so 4 days after receiving the order, I decided to claim at Catawiki itself to get my money back and have the biohazard goods taken away. The claim has been rejected by Catawiki considering that the 3-day deadline for claiming has been exceeded, and they oblige me to pay for the return shipment (which costs more than the boxes) to get the refund. There is no real coverage for receipt of damage goods, even if they know that it's a potentially harmful merchandise for health. You can't trust Catawiki, since you can receive damaged or infected products and they refuse any responsibility on quality or health check on them, even when they charge you for that.

I was a registered seller but I put six articles up for sale all six was rejected one said we don’t sell Dunhill watches when after I closed my account I saw they was offering Dunhill watches for auction .what is this site all about?

I won the bid. I paid €65 delivery, which I thought was a little expensive for a small Chinese table screen. Then the seller contacted me telling me that he was disappointed in the sale and wanted another €300 before he will send the item. Catawiki will not respond on any meaningful way and the seller is repeatedly asking for another €300.

They told me to wait for experts to check who will pay for the return shipment, told me the result after 14 days, I send it back and pay for it, then they say they won't give me back the 461€ because the 14 days are over. Now I neither have the product nor the money. Will go to court! Edit to answer the reply: well that doesn't help because they are not willing to help me and say it's my bad I didn't send it back in time though they told me to wait for the experts opinion!!!

I was a seller and buyer too. I am a qualified expert too. Catawiki undervalues the seller s item .They also have stupid rules with the starting/reserve price. In the first times if you could not sell your item, after the third try you could not set reserve price up. Nowadays its happening after the first try. Catawiki does not give fair valuation which can be misleading to sellers who dont hold experience/qualification. ( For example: one of my item sold on Catawiki for 420 Euro, but luckily the buyer didnt pay for that. Few month later I could sold that item for 1200£ on different site .) Customer service is also very bad. Their payment system is also unfair.

Catawiki has a decent selection of African art. I wanted to try the site out to see how it differs from eBay. My first experience was great. However my second experience was terrible! For some reason my credit card would not work through the app so I had to call customer service. I was shocked that Catawiki did not have a toll-free number! Me being in the states I had to call customer service 3 times and incurred close to $100 and phone charges! So now I’m supposed to pay for the auction item that I one and $100 worth a phone charger? Their customer support kept me on the phone for 20 minutes and did not solve my problems! I asked for a supervisor to email me because the emails that they send out are the “no reply” types. I will never do business with Catawiki again! I’ll stick with eBay!

My first and last experience on Catawiki. I spent a lot of money on an item and have been sent the wrong lot by the seller (something much cheaper) and on top of this I had to pay just under £100 on the customs tax, Catawiki told me to get a refund on the tax from the government, there is no way I can do this I have called Parcel Force, border control and HMRC they said no, so I insisted that the seller refund me for his error. I was told to send it back and I arranged the shipping (£34), but the seller has not refunded me my money or covered the customs tax or return shipping. I have an open claim with Catawiki, I told them if I do not get my refund on these I will sell the incorrect item to make my money back, but they told me I cannot do that if I do they will not refund my money for the purchase I did not receive. It has been over a month. There is no accountability on the sellers at Catawiki, they can get away with this behavior, the seller is selling another exact item in a new auction now without even addressing my incorrect order! Why are they allowed to continue to sell if they are messing up orders? Catawiki do not protect their buyers, if your order gets messed up you will lose money. They also extend the auction time at the end when bids are high! Extremely disappointed.

As soon as I added my credit card data to my account, my account was blocked by the scammers that run Catawiki. Catawiki.com is a phishing site, they stole my credit card data. NEVER add your credit card data on catawiki.com they steal money and credit cards. Never buy or sell on Catawiki. The scammer that runs Catawiki from the Netherlands is a fraud and we are now filing legal complaints with the official authorities the Netherlands where drugs, gambling and prostitution isn't profitable anymore to the Mafia, now they deal in fake antiques and engage in money laundering the proceeds of their illegal business activities.

A lot of the so called “experts” are just noobs. Catawiki went downhill in a few years with stupid fraudulent sellers. Stay away from this site.

I bid twice in the last second and the auction is extended each time by 90 seconds, until I lose the auction. I have participated in many auctions at various auction houses, but I have never experienced this type of auction anywhere. They seem to be hunting for the highest possible price by extending the auction time and fishing for the naive. Very sad and unprofessional
