I’m not good navigating instagram so if I’m studying a scale and I want to go back to wherever I was, can’t get back there. Also the pentatonic scales by Peter Martin only has fingerings for right hand. Shouldn’t I be practicing with my left hand? If so which would the fingerings be? Thanks.

The site seems highly dedicated towards the advanced player and could use some gap filling between the beginner and the more advanced user. Keeping any material like this as musical as possible and not an encyclopedia of chords or scales would be helpful. I could spend a year going through the chord voicings on this site and never play an actual tune. I gravitate towards the musical or in context lessons. Notation with the specific examples is helpful so when you want to back over something you can find it quickly rather than trying to find it in the video. In the guitar department you really need some hollow body courses and not just nylon string since the bulk of jazz is played on a hollow body. That being said I appreciate the incredible care and work that are going into all of your courses. Definitely filling a gap that needs to be filled.

The content is really good but it's very difficult to navigate within a video (e.g. 5sec back or forward) and the keyboard shortcuts don't work either. I hope this will improve soon...

Hi Ryusuke, thanks for taking the time to give us a review. We do actually have a series of keyboard shortcuts that can help you in both the Living Notation player and the Simple Player. Impressive range of artists who have generated video content. Great tech innovations such as the living notation. Really like the community aspect. But ultimately, recorded video content is not an effective substitute for real life lessons, training and mentorship. Open Studio could greatly enhance its offering if it, for example, generating a service where student could book lessons (over zoom) with top level teachers (for extra $ of course). Serious students won’t get very far without expert one to one feedback from world class players.

Thanks for the honest feedback, Ian. It sounds like you may be looking for the community-based coaching as part of Open Studio Pro (openstudiojazz.com/pro). It includes over 50 live coaching sessions with opportunities for feedback on your playing from one of our instructors. If that doesn't suit you, we do have monthly masterclasses where members like you can volunteer to be featured in the masterclass. Let us know if you are interested. It's included in your Piano Access Pass membership. The next one is Sept 16th at 1pm ET with Geoffrey Keezer. If interested, simply email us at support@openstudiojazz.com Best, Dan co-founder, Open Studio

I love the concepts being taught. I don't like the layout of the web instruction materials. I seek to watch exactly how the examples are played to include finger selection. There is no finger notation on the music and if I blow up the screen large enough to ascertain the preferred way to finger a particular phrase, the controls are off the screen making any attempts to pause, rewind and replay very difficult. You are on to a great idea in the presentation, but it needs to be refined.

Hi there Edmund, Thanks for the feedback. Fingering is something that we intentionally don't notate since there truly isn't a right or wrong way. As far as the full screen option, there is a square icon in the playbar that should expand the entire player to fill the screen, leaving the controls easily accessible. Happy practicing. There are some pearls of wisdom here as you might expect from perhaps the greatest living jazz musician. It's pretty much geared to novice players, though, and I recommend his book Building Jazz Bass Lines for a more cost-effective way to get inside his process.

So far I'm enjoying the lessons. It's a bit hard to navigate. I am primarily interested in piano jazz impro and improving voicings. It has been hard for me to find good impro lessons. Suggestions? Otherwise it's great...good stuff so far.

I love Peter and Adam. Both are incredibly talented and very good educators...not to mention funny and witty. I've been watching their YouTube videos for the last couple of years and enjoying them immensely, so, I decided to take one of the Open Studio courses. I am disappointed with my experience to date. I find the website is kind of kluggy. I will persist and hopefully my experience will improve as I gain more familiarity with the website.

It's a bit clunky navigating around and doing lessons. I've been at it for a few days paging around through various levels, and I still haven't found material that's calling to me to practice. It's either too easy or too hard or not interesting. I don't have a good sense of the structure and goals of each lesson, how the lesson fits into groups of other lessons, etc, would be helpful if this were made more clear so I don't have to skip through them and guess. For example on a guitar site I love, whenever you do a lesson, there are tags associated with that lesson, such as "difficulty level 3 out of 10", "category rock", "string bending", "string skipping", "phrygian dominant". And you can see other lessons that are string bending lessons, difficulty 3 out of 10, and so forth. They also had prebuilt paths to gradually up the difficulty and progress. In summary, I've been browsing and playing around a bit for a few days now, and I still don't have a clear idea of how I'm going to use the site and the content to progress as a pianist and musician.

between a 2 and 3.... I have been playing the piano for awhile, so I am not a beginner with no experience. But even with some years of playing a little and reading music and familiarity with chords, etc. This should be an intermediate class the Jazz Piano for Beginners. Peter throws around all sorts of piano jargon that I sort of understand, but a beginner would not.... Also, the skill level is not a beginner's level either...

This is very subjective, but I find the presenters to be over chatty and "joking around" - I would prefer a more concise and to the point presentation. But they know their stuff, and how to teach it - so I will grin and bear it - can't have everything and I'm sure there are plenty that love the style. Maybe because I'm a Brit and not American.

I haven't been able to dig deeply, overall it seems great however I wish the PDFs of worksheets, leadsheets and exercises were more detailed.

The website is totally lacking essential features like search and filter for courses. Also fundamental is the history of the users where they can get can easily access new lessons from started courses. I’m enjoying some courses

Hi Mauro, Thanks for the feedback. We are working with our platform folks to make navigating through the site easier. FYI, we do have a search function for the Jazz Piano Method course if you use the beacon in the lower right corner of the screen while on the course. You can search for tune name, topic or keyword. HI there Alon. We have a few tools built in to help with that. 1. On your dashboard, the course(s) that you have started will have a button RESUME COURSE. Courses you haven't started yet will say START COURSE. 2. When you resume a course, it will pick up at the section or lesson you left off on. Hope that helps. -Dan @ Open Studio

It’s a bit beyond my skill set. I like the two minute scale lessons. Haven’t had time for the program I bought.

Bought it on sale and glad I didn’t pay a lot more. I haven’t finished the course yet, but so far I’ve seen a bunch of videos that I watched for free previously on YouTube. Other videos either didn’t really teach much, they were Christian and Carl sitting around talking about themselves or other players, or just listening to old recordings. I kind of expected there to be more of a lesson like, “here’s how you do this”. I’m being picky, but you did ask my opinion. I hope by the time I finish the course I have changed my mind. We’ll see what the rest looks like.

I Recently purchased "elements of solo piano " w/Geoff Keezer the discount was great. for me though, this package was not a good fit. Keezer is a fantastic play-no doubt about that, but I expected that he might go into a more spelled out break down of what he was doing in the transcription-didn't happen. Adam's vids were very good in content but a lot of it was stuff I've already done. Very excellent for beginners. To be honest, if I had reviewed all the content ahead of time, I wouldn't have purchased the course.
