I’ve been a member of Open Studio for about two months now, and it has already been a very fun and inspiring experience. Before joining I had taken some lessons with a teacher and studied from books and random videos, but I often struggled to organize everything and make real sense of it. Open Studio helped me start putting the pieces together in a more practical way. Adam Maness is an incredible teacher. He has a way of explaining things that makes them feel clear and approachable. Even though it’s still early for me to fully measure my progress, I can already feel that I’m growing. It has also influenced the way I think about music in general, and that has helped me as a classical piano teacher too. The community is another big part of the experience. It’s motivating to see others learning, sharing, and evolving. You don’t feel alone in the process. I would recommend Open Studio Jazz to anyone, at any level. It’s a place where you can grow, stay inspired, and genuinely enjoy the journey.

I am very happy with this course and the way it is presented. The hands - on approach is terrific. I am still struggling with the chromatic scale with both hands, I have slowed down the clips and isolated smaller sections of the scale going up and down. I get back and repeat bits if I have to, I am in no hurry to get through. One question I have to ask is how somebody like me can find the right keys while looking at the notes? I have a 49 key controller, is that something I need to worruy about? Cheers George

Hey George, I'm glad you're enjoying the course so far. Hand independence is one of the more challenging parts of playing piano. You may want to practice the chromatic scale with the metronome before attempting it with Adam. To answer your questions: finding keys while reading just takes muscle memory over time. You can try feeling for the groups of black keys to orient your hands without looking down. Also, your 49-key controller is perfectly fine for now, so no need to worry. Especially if you're looking to play with others, 49 keys is enough, as the bassist usually covers the lower octaves anyway.

excellent presentations of a variety of the elements of being a jazz musician-understandable and offerings appropriate for various levels from beginner to advanced with many different teachers and written materials as well

I don't get time to check out as many lessons as I'd like but I never fail to learn something new and useful when I do.

Open Studio is AMAZING. Peter and Adam are both exceptional educators, and offer tuition that's both high quality and incredibly accessible. I'm a classicaly trained pianist who has dabbled in jazz over the years, but have always wanted to dive deeper into this wonderful discipline. Open Studio provides clear pathways, and more than a lifetime of material for me to study! Well worth the price of subscription. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to grow in their jazz understanding and skills.

I have been gradually working on the jump start course, and it is really great. When I finish it I intend to at least go onto another course, or pay the monthly fee and get access to more courses.

The best thing ever for learning jazz! Wish it was around 40 years ago when I 1st started playing it. Pre internet times. Never too late to improve and keep learning. It's a language, live it, play it. be it!
