There's a ton of material, but while teachers repeatedly mention "get this in your ear and fingers" the resources don't actually help with that. As a metaphor, imagine an exercise class where they tell you all about the push-up, the benefits of the push-up, why it works, how it works, 20 alterations, and intricacies of the push-up, but never make you do 100 of them every day? I don't want theory, I want practice. Y'all should do guided practices, where you really TELL people what to do. : 1. "do these scales, in this pattern, at this BPM, increase to this BPM" 2. "do these voicings, over these changes 10 times." 3. "transcribe this, play it in these three scales" ^Guided shedding. Day-by-day shed.

Nice content but user experience with an Android smartphone is not so good. If I want to start a video or navigate between lesson there's always a variable lag of time. Theres not enough space on the screen to avoid pressing buttons we don't want to press, looping is not precise and all operation is charge by a lot of waste of time to navigate. All fonction aviable (keyboard piano roll, transcription, subtitles, loop fonction ) présent very often bugs and they don't work correctly. Videos too, they are sometimes very long and the good information need to be extrapolated from a lot of words and space fillers. I suggest to invest on a platform "mobile friendly", a lighter one, that allow to navigate quickly and without waste of time. All fonction like piano roll, synchronized slice sheet musique, loop and so on must be revised to remove bugs and problem, they slow down a lot all the system without advantages. I use a lot YouTube, I pay for removing ads, it's fast, audio and video have an enough good quality to profit completely of the content. There's not fancy option that's true, and looping is almost impossible for z lack of precision. I hope my ideas are clear, if you want we can discuss again about these subjects. Best regards Stefano Schipani

I'm sorry to say that I regret my purchases! I had high hopes, OpenStudio really does have a stellar cast of amazing musicians! I purchased 2 jazz piano courses, I printed my first 100 page course to discover that it is difficult to read, painfully compressed. It's the font size and bunched notes that make it more of a visual challenge rather than a learning experience. Then, I started my second course to discover that the video player has just one setting - video quality... you cannot project/cast to another device, there is no ability to move forward or backwards, just pause, or restart from the beginning with no fast forward!!! Can you imagine? It is exactly like those infomercial ad players that do not allow any control. So, if I want to back up 15 seconds - just reload the page and start over??? Sadly all of the contributors have attached themselves to an anchor, I just wish there was a boat attached.

Hi David, I love giving great news to folks. There are a plethora of keyboard shortcuts to address your issues and more! Apologies that they weren't more evident. If you press the three vertical dots to the right on the playbar, and select "keyboard shortcuts" (or simply press the "?" key) you will see a bunch of common and some even unique ways to make better use of the video, most importantly is the left and right arrows while playing to quickly advance or go back 5 seconds. You can always drag and move the playback indicator on the playbar to move throughout the lesson. Happy practicing! Dan Martin Co-Founder, Open Studio

I got your subscription but noticed much of your material is free on Youtube. Also, your website should change once you are a paying member. It seems very confusing. Thank you.

Hi Paul. While we do have a variety of educational materials available on YouTube you will find that it is just the tip of the iceberg as all of our full curriculum courses and mentor sessions are exclusive to Open Studio members. Regarding the website, we do have some exciting updates coming very soon that will address your recommendation. Let us know if you have any other questions. Best, Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio

I find the teachings are for experienced pianists. People who already know how to play. Even some of the beginner Jazz courses are not for people with limited experience.

Hi Brad, The course you have access to, Essential Jazz Piano Etudes is likely not best suited for all beginners. However we do have a number of Level 1 or 2 courses that may be better for you. Take a look here: https://www.openstudiojazz.com/piano-pathway and let us know if there is a course you would like us to exchange it for. Best, Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio

The lessons are good, thank you. The jump into week 2 from week 1 is big. There may need to be intermediate lessons in both weeks to be honest. I'm trying to run it on a kindle which is frustrating. Is there an app that I can use?

Hi Clive, Thanks for the feedback on the jump from week 1 to week 2. I'll pass on to the team. As far using the site on the Kindle, the following factors can ensure you have a great learning experience: fast internet (>10MB/s), a Kindle fire that is fairly new (

The concept is great. Opportunity to learn a universe of jazz concepts and techniques from live jazz artists. But I have decided to quit. 1. Growing pains never-ending. In the background the website navigation changing so much it was hard to find continuity, and sometimes would be unable to find a regular offering. That has gotten better, but then another glitch. 2. Some downright bad pedagogy. Worst was the focus of one teacher on himself, watching that narcissism get in the way of his own goals. He would try to demonstrate something by playing it excessively fast and then saying "how good is that?!" as though he needed adulation more than anything else. I have returned to a great teacher I know well and given up on the fantasy that OS is a cornucopia. I loved Peter, and Bob DeBoo and all the master class teachers and the enthusiasm of the other students.

Too overwhelming. The number of lessons that showed on one page was just too much and discouraged me from continuing. Also, reading sheet music extensively to learn is not what I want. I want to learn piano the way a blind person would learn to play even though, I'm not blind. I cannot find anything on the internet about how to teach blind people jazz piano. Please consider bringing someone into Open Studio who teaches blind players and start a course on that.

Hi there. Thanks for taking the time to review. We would be happy to go over the best way to get the most from the courses. Sent me an email at support@openstudiojazz.com and we can set a call up. As far as the suggestion for the concept "teaching jazz for the blind", I'll take this to the team. Best, Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio

I think that there is too much material and not a real way to practice. I know the Jazz theory but I don know how to develop the language creating fluid and fast Jazz lines, various kind of complex chords and how to harmonize or reharm a melody. Finally my level is stopped to the intermediate, I don’t see improvement. Antonio.

Hi there Antonio. Sorry you feel your progress has halted. Have you tried the Daily Guided Practice Sessions led by Adam Maness that are included in your Piano Access Pass? Best, Dan

I was very satisfied by your youtube videos, so I decided to purchase your online courses. But I found that online courses are insufficient than youtube videos. It was a bit dissapointing.

I selected Open Chords...and I am an intermediate player but I did expect the guy to physically apply the chord stylings to a song not just sit in front of piano and play a few out.... many people are visual learners as well. Won’t be using it....sorry PD

The classes are over-priced and not very in-depth. $77 to watch Adam Maness illustrate the Philipps Exercises? Or to learn the A position and B position left hand voicings? It’s excessive.

The descriptions and notebook are wanting. The course is called beginning jazz piano but the presenter expects students to start a medium to fast tempos. The looping effect is nice but there needs to be a slow down effect as well. Also, fingerings are not clearly delineated in the shell chapter. I feel as if I have wasted my money!

Hey Steve, Sorry if this course wasn't a good fit for you. I'm adding the precursor course Jazz Piano Jump-Start to your dashboard that may be a better fit. Also, just so you know you can adjust the speed using the Living Notation player, using the speed controls on the left side of the play bar. Send us an email at support@openstudionetwork.com if you need any other assistance.
