Once you come here, there really is no need to look further. I PROMISE! I have been studying this music for a long time, and every time I experience "wanderlust" and try something else, I always come back home to Open Studio. Whether you have a personal instructor or coach NOTHING compares to this. Just stop. You have finally found the ONE-STOP SHOP. The price alone does not compare. What you pay here for one month is what you will pay for one lesson for most teachers. Plus all the content here will take you multiple lifetimes to truly acquire. The instructors are WOLRD CLASS!!! Thank you OPEN STUDIO.

Open studio is worth the 'price of admission' and really should cost more than it does. So thank you guys for keeping costs accessible. I don't know how you do that, but you haven't priced many of us out, for which I am grateful. Open Studio is the heart of what musicianship is about, a willingness to show others exactly how to get where you as masters in the craft are. And you don't oversell. Your site is the real deal for those who what to learn Jazz. Thanks for not underselling the reality that being good at the piano isn't an overnight process. Progress and mastery require dedication and work - while having fun.

An absolutely phenomenal platform for learning jazz. The courses are well structured, the teachers are fantastic, and the lessons are super inspiring! I'd give a thousand star review if I could!

I'm an intermediate piano player but decided to try the Jazz Piano Jump-Start. I'm quite satisfied with the course. It's always good to revisit very fundacional concepts with different approaches. The guided practices featured in this course are great.

Obviously the best Jazz course I have ever seen, and I have seen a bunch. However, I find Adam's lessons much more useful in terms of pace, depth and the way of presentation. No doubt Peter is a more experienced professional, and there are indeed gems in some of the videos (especially the YouTube series), but maybe Peter has been a pro for too long and has lost the empathy for level 1-3 beginners. Some of the courses, even though with "beginner" in the title, and starts with super-rudimentary interval, major/minor chord building, soon skips to a lot of improv and tips that are not very practiceable and progressive. I myself might be a strange combination, but let me elaborate. I'm not in the music business but I take piano and keyboard series, most of the early times I self-learn, and it's been like that for ~10 years (I'm 36 now). As an adult I learn the theory of things super fast, I'm perfectly aware of the scales, chord qualities, modes, shell voicing, blues form, etc., because I've read like 50 jazz books and followed pretty much every piano / jazz tutor on YouTube. The thing is, knowing something by brain is so different than creating flow of notes confidently by hands. Living in an env without much communications amongst musicians I don't have the privilege to learn by imitation and conversation, so even my technique is probably medium level and I can play ok with clear instructions, it haunts me badly when I sit with only chord progressions and has to come up good patterns just in time. I find Adam's pentatonics series very enjoyable, practicing those patterns makes me feel closer to the feel of improv and they do sound good. However, scanning through all the lessons I find there is still a missing link for people like me. If I'm allowed to speak for my kind of people. I don't really need anything rudimentary so it's not like every lesson has to start with definitions of major/minor/tonality/blues scale/form/pentatonics/altered scale/etc., but I desperately need for some ingredients to start improv, probably step by step. First with ingredients of choice of notes (pentatonics) and probably some rhythms (which Adam had some in the Rhythm course), then with the palettes do some GPS that mix and match the combos of the ingredients. I really love the "call and response" style GPS because I don't have other musicians to practice with, so I imagined that Adam would do some comping and improv, 8 measures, then for the student. The same thing goes for comping, in a reversely way. I know everything is created on the spot but there are definitely patterns that can get us a real kickstart. Also it would be nice to dissect famous standards performances that use certain patterns to put more confidence in students. This way, together with some ideas for how students could explore and push the envelope little by little, then it would be very nice. With all that said, your courses and videos are the closest to what I really loved to learn with. If you need my inputs on build new courses, please do make contact, I'm more than happy to help!

Really grateful for your hard work. I'm graduated as a classical pianist and was self taught in jazz, what a mess. Now I finally have a well structured guide that is full and deep. It became clear what to concentrate on and daily routine got more value. PS.: found you on YouTube with You'll hear it, got addicted, and here we are. Happy practicing

The lessons are fun and break learning this large topic into digestible chunks. Love the focus on learning by ear. Peter and Adam and fun and communicate well. Hope to be learning here for years.

Only on my 1st week but boy I'm glad I chose this site over one or two others I was considering,I'd done the trials at the others and though very good they weren't for me as too much variety whereas Open Sudio is pure jazz based so I can focus on what I love. The quality of the videos is way and above what I've tried at others. One feels a sense of I am really in a Holy place where jazz is king and the teachers are spot on right for me,I'm over the moon I've made a great choice. Onwards and upwards.....

The content is really good but it's very difficult to navigate within a video (e.g. 5sec back or forward) and the keyboard shortcuts don't work either. I hope this will improve soon...

It is so good. I'm learning. Adam Maness's guided practice sessions are game-changing. I need a personal trainer for my music and he's exactly that.

Open Studio is an amazing learning tool! For a long time I’ve wanted to be a competent jazz player, and have struggled through private lessons/other online resources. I’m no slouch musically (classically-trained, PhD in composition and theory) but no other system I’ve found has distilled jazz concepts so thoroughly and simply as Open Studio! From one music educator to another: thank you Open Studio for finally demystifying jazz for me! :)

Really enjoy the material! As a guitarist I've always loved the way pianist interpret chords and voicings pertaining to jazz, and you do a great job of breaking down the info. I read in both clefs and simply transpose to fit onto the fretboard. If you haven't already, please do a deep dive into Maccoy Tyner's approach. Kind Regards, Ward

Even though I play piano for a living, I needed to continue learning from someone who I would be inspired by. After discovering Peter Martin on YouTube, I signed up to Open Studio in Dec 2017 to improve my Solo piano. This year 2022, I finally made my first solo piano Album. A lot of my mental confidence is a direct result from studying solo piano through Open Studio. Thank you to all of the great educators and guests that have been featured in their master classes. Fantastic content, and awesome people there. I highly recommend this for pianists at all levels. If you’re a seasoned pro reading this.. you will still benefit from Peter Martin, Geoffrey Keezer, Fred Hersche, and Adam Maness, not to mention all the non pianists they have featured there.

Hi there! I'm very happy that I found Open Studio. It's an amazing resource for great jazz education at highest professional standards. I'm a professional composer and bass player, but I wanted to switch to piano as my main instrument, and it's a long road, but I know I'm in the right path with Open Studio. Now for the feedback: Adam, the Pentatonics Course is amazing, it has really opened my eyes. But, there's something I would have wished: In the guided practice sessions, let's say "Take the Coltrane") you make the walking and the comping, but you don't play yourself an example of the exercises as you would practice them. I think it would be a great help that you play it once. Thank you very much, you are making and incredible work for jazz education and for musicians who want to take the next step. I'm definitely going to get the Piano Access Pass. Best regards. Gustavo Guardiola

I am absolutely loving Open Studio! I am a classically trained pianist who hadn't played piano in 25 years. Two years ago I bought myself a digital piano. I also purchased a year-long online jazz course with Piano Groove. Unfortunately it turned out to be a great disappointment. The lessons moved too quickly and were hard to follow, and plenty of assumptions were made about what I should already be able to do. I was quite surprised at how difficult it was for someone with my level of piano experience to follow. I paid over $300 and only used it a handful of times. This year I did some more research online and found that Open Studio came highly recommended. I purchased the Jazz Piano Jump-Start for novices and it was the perfect choice. I immediately fell in love with the lesson format, the instructors and the ease of navigation through the lessons. Adam Maness and Peter Martin are excellent teachers who clearly love what they do! Each lesson has a structured warm-up, a bit of ear training, an etude study and some time for free play. I really appreciate the focus on ear training and on proper technique. I never thought I could learn to play piano without sheet music, but in just a few weeks I am already starting to make the transition. I also thought I was too old to memorize, but I am learning that it is still possible at 48. Today I did my first lesson with one of the included backing tracks and had so much fun playing along with the accompaniment. My 21 year old daughter, who has never really heard me play piano before, thought I sounded great! All in all, I highly recommend this course. I live out in the middle of nowhere and never thought I'd be able to find a jazz piano instructor where I am. I am so thankful!
