“A great idea in theory but perhaps not the best option for everyone. I have a long pixie cut and there was just enough dye for full coverage so if u have longer or thicker hair, get extra dye. The application was easy. The included brush was great with strong bristles and the right size to color. Love the barrier oil. Would make cleanup a breeze for darker colors. Smell was pleasant and not over powering. I also have a sensitive scalp and the dye didn't burn or make my head itch like store brands. I started with a darker brown color on my hair with mousy blonde roots. I ordered the lightest ash blond but unfortunately the colour was not the desired result. My roots took the color well but after 50 minutes (10minutes more than the recommended time for stubborn greys) the best it got was a coopery/strawberry blond. It's not hideous but it's not great either. The ends which had a brown colour already didn't change at all. The shampoo and conditioner smelled amazing and my hair is very soft and shiny. Shame the color wasn't the expected result because otherwise it's a great idea and I would have happily had a subscription.”

“The colour I chose was not as ashey as I expected and the grey coverage was not as good as I hoped. This product is okay but maybe not the best if you want to cover up a large amount of grey hair.”

“The positives: the conditioner is amazing and soo soft, no smell once the dye is washed out, the colour is rich and natural, the accessories make cleaning up easy, grey coverage is good. The negatives: the colour was darker than intended, it stained my skin more than normal home dyes despite the oil barrier, it smelt pretty bad while it was on, despite having an undercut and mid-length hair I felt like I was running light on product.”

“It was very easy process and my hair came out so soft it felt like I had been to the hairdresser. The colour is lovely too. The only downside is that it barely covered my gray and white hairs, and when I washed my hair for the first time since colouring it all of the colour on them washed away. It was disappointing seeing as I followed the instructions about gray hair to the absolute letter. I guess my greys are more stubborn than most.”

“I love the smell and colour however after 2 weeks I find that the colour has more or less faded after a few washs and I don't even wash my hair everyday so in this regard it is disappointing. Comparing this to other brands, I'm afraid I won't be re-purchasing it. Also, I don't why but my hair became rather dry and frizzy after each wash which requires a signifcant amount of argan oil so sadly I won't be re-purchasing it. Thank you for the kit - that piece was a great idea and I like it a lot!”

“I love the IDEA of The Shade, but the experience wasn't fantastic. First of all, the packaging was great and the little at-home kit with the brush and bowl are made well. Unfortunately, the barrier oil smelled awful; I didn't even put it on and decided to use some moisturiser instead. The hair dye itself was fine and the colour came out nice. I had a bit of staining around my hairline, so I went to use the dye remover wipe. Wowza! Big mistake. It felt like my skin was burning, and I had to wash it off straight away. Overall, this system might work well for those who aren't as conscientious about the chemicals they put on their skin (it is hair dye, after all), but I won't be using it again. It seems like a total waste to buy the whole kit when I will only be using the colour cream.”
