After 7 years membership I broke down for the first time a few days ago. I waited in pitch black, pouring rain, on the brow of a hill in the middle of the moors for 5 hours, receiving a message every half hour saying someone was on their way. They weren't. Had to call the police to cordon off my car as I had no hazard lights as the battery died. Terrifying experience. They eventually sent a third party company to tow my car. They said I had no option but to go back to where I was staying as it was a BH and no garages were open, they said they would sort it out the next day. The next day comes and they say as I had my tow I will need to pay £250 to be towed to a garage as the clutch had gone and it could not be fixed at the roadside. The RAC are crooks who sacked most of their drivers during covid, sold off the fleet and have not replenished them, all whilst still taking members membership fees. I have cancelled my renewal and will be going with Green Flag.

I broke down on Friday 15th December & called for assistance. I was told because I am a home carer worker I would need to pay £160 for you to come out to me. I was left stranded & had to call a private company who charged me £80. My policy was paid in full & ends October 2024. I phoned the next day to complain & was promised a phone call by 5pm that day but that never happened. I phoned again today & was told I would be called back which I was, I was then told to hold the line which I did but then cut off. This is a disgrace & will be taking this further. Nobody in this company has a clue what they are doing, you are passed from one person to another I was previously with the AA & never ever had a problem with them, I only went with RAC as I brought a new car & had free cover with you for 1 year then unfortunately decided to carry it on. I have many friends & family with the RAC & have told them of my experience & they have all said once their cover ends they will not be staying with you as to worried they will be left stranded like I was I need this sorted ASAP as I now have no cover & am stuck with you until October, I would like a full refund of the money I have paid so I can go with a professional company & not passed from pillow to post as nobody in your company has a clue what they are doing

Absolutely appaulling. Rang and doubled confirmed that the Mobile tyre service could attend to us today when we did the booking with the RAC over the phone the other day. They assured us that was the case and happily took our money up front. We explicity let them know if the tyres were unable to be done we need to know as heading off in 2 days time across the Nullabour and would not then be able to book in elsewhere as other tyre places needed to order the tyres in. So, guess what, yep RAC cancelled today by email. Unbelievable. Rang they were apologetic and unable to further help us to get some one else out. Not happy! While on hold to them listening to their voice message recording stating how they can be relied upon. On requesting our refund that was not a problem except would take 3- 5 days for this to be refunded. SO RAC gets their money asap cancels on us and now we have to wait 3- 5 days for the refund which would come in useful to pay the other tyre place that went out of their way to source tyres and to source a place where we could get them fitted. SO a BIG THANK YOU to Joe at TYRESALES

24 HOURS LATER STILL WAITING ON RECOVERY

I'd give the RAC '0' stars if it was an option. I've used them 3 times over the past year and I've encountered incredibly rude and insulting mechanics. They make you feel guilty for having to call them out. I'll be signing up to another breakdown company instead, surely no other company can be this bad? Avoid the RAC at all costs!

I broke down and paid for a tow upfront as they said it was unlikely that it would be fixed on the side of the road but if it was then i could get a refund. the mechanic did get my car up and running and i got home so no tow was needed. After several calls over the space of 4 weeks and hours on the phone to get a refund for a tow that never happened, i still don't have my refund. I keep getting told it will be in my account but never actually arrives. The RAC has effectively stolen my money. There is no way in hell i would ever recommend using these thief's.

My experience with this company was incredibly frustrating and disheartening. I found myself stranded in the cold for an extended period, enduring from 6:15 AM until 10:30 AM. Despite assurances from the agent to receive a callback, none was forthcoming. Each time I reached out, the agents appeared uninformed about my situation. To my disbelief, one agent even threatened to cancel the job if I contacted them again. The lack of information regarding the estimated recovery time only heightened my frustration. To compound the situation, the RAC breakdown mechanic who eventually arrived first suggested the need for pick-up recovery before assessing my car's issue. He mentioned arranging it while en route. Regrettably, upon inspecting my car from a short distance, he admitted he couldn't fix it. Surprisingly, he didn't bring or use an OBD diagnostic. Instead, he attempted a jump start and informed me that he would need to organize a pick-up, a task he had initially claimed to handle on his way to me. Following the diagnosis, I was swiftly charged £263, and the on-site patrol advised that the team would contact me with the next steps, which never happened. No details were shared about the tow company. An agent on the phone informed me that as they cannot tow back to my house in one trip, they would need to arrange multiple pickups. I was given a mere estimate that my car would be returned to my home address in 3 days. After further waiting, I was then told that the car might be returned in 5 days. Given the Christmas season, I find myself without a car and no viable options. Throughout this ordeal, the agents provided a series of implausible excuses, including claims about being unable to confirm the time and restrictions on towing due to limited drive time. Based on my experience, I strongly discourage others from using this company. Opting for a random tow company would likely be both more cost-effective and hassle-free.

Truck broke down on Tuesday afternoon 19/12/2023 at 16:30. The driver is still stranded over 28 hours later and they are now saying the recovery will be Thursday morning, absolutely ridiculous, take your money then don't want to know - DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!

Disabled, I was left waiting for nearly 4 hours. Dispute having asthma and needed my medical. It took 1welve telephone calls . I The following day I waited from 09:00 to 16:40 for the R.A.C. to repair my car from a puncture. ( as discussed by the R.A.C. The previous evening. I understand that they are busy . The RAC is one of or if not the busiest in the U.K. Their profit margins are huge. Your customers are not morons, ……so much for priority service. Mobility office and local newspapers contacted.

Absolute sham of a company. The company I work for has thankfully finally seen sense and left them as they can’t afford to pay people to sit in a broken down van at the side of the road all day. They left me at the side of the M25 from 4pm until 1am in winter in a van with a snapped timing belt so no heat. If they were honest I wouldn’t walked to the services but they just kept promising they’d be 45 minutes. All their recovery trucks seem to be subbed out which doesn’t help as they obviously lie to RAC to get the jobs. This isn’t a one off, we used to panic when we broke down as we knew we’d be stranded for the day.

Complaint letter to the RAC… I would like to complain about the dreadful service I received earlier this week. After standing outside for a few days over the cold weather my car refused to start when I attempted to return home. As the temperature was below freezing it soon flattened the battery (which is essentially in very good condition). I had no alternative but to phone for assistance from you, a service I have paid for for around 40 years and rarely use. My call was placed with you around 12:15 on Monday 4th December and was informed that I could expect someone to attend between 15:00 and 17:00. This would have been a lengthy wait and outside of the 60 minutes your website claims “We get to most breakdowns in 60 mins or less”. However your recorded, and I now suspect standard. message told me you were unusually busy. As the afternoon progressed the expected time gradually increased every time I refreshed the app. This leads me to think that such estimates were in no way relating calls to resources and I was not in fact included in any plan for service. You will recall that Monday was particularly cold and it was constantly raining. also bearing in mind that your advice is to stand by the roadside away from the car I was in danger of hyperthermia. Even sat in the car it was extremely cold. By late afternoon when it had gone dark and the expected attendance time had moved to 6.56pm to 8.56pm (I wiould like to know why your system claims to be able to estimate to exact minutes but still has a range of 2 hours) I called my wife to come in her car to provide somewhere warm and dry to shelter. She drove the nearly 40 miles and continued to stay with me awaiting your imminent arrival. The ETA still crept up eventually reaching between 11:30pm and 01:30 at which time I abamdined hope and prepared to leave but just as we were setting off I received a call from your engineer to say he was 15 minutes away. He eventually arrived around 9:00pm. After spending some time with the car he decided he was unable to help and we would need recovery. Due to the excessive wait I had already suffered he advised that we could arrange a convenient time the following day and we would be contacted to arrange this. I returned home leaving the car at the side of the road. Overnight no text was received but the app said that my car would be collected between 08:00 and 12:00 so still just a wild guess but nevertheless I got my wife to help get me to the car and resume my wait. As I am familiar with car mechanics to some extent I suspected that the problem may lie with the cold damaging the ignition coil for which I had a spare. I took this with me and fitted it whereupon I managed to start the engine. I saw no prospect of anything being promised by the RAC actually materialising so made my way home. Out of interest I did not cancel the incident until 16:00 by which time the app was telling me that you had identified the resource necessary to help but now offered no ETA at all. When cancelling the call I expressed my disappointment with the service and said I wnted to complain. I was given two choices, email or speak to the complaints department, I chose the latter. I was put through to another recorded message telling me how important you felt my call was but still failed to answer it. I waited listening to the recordings for some 15 minutes before geing given aniother message saying this service was no longer available and the call terminated. I have only recently renewed my policy with you but now feel that even the full refund of this would be little compensation for the 27 hours you left me abandoned and had it not been for my wife helping I might still be there. There response £60 compensation.

RAC insurance Recoveries are lowlife bottom feeding scum, they insure someone who pulled out in front of me at a stop sign and I had nowhere to go except hit them in the drivers side rear and because I didn’t have insurance they tell me I’m at fault, probably because I don’t have the backing of a large company like them so they think they can bully me. Dog scum’s. Now I’m told to put my version in writing and they will assess it and decide on it, yeah right like they’re going to be an impartial judge of the accident and find themselves liable to pay. It takes a real lowlife person to work for a lowlife company and treat people like this and if they think they can intimidate me as though they’re a law unto themselves think again because I’m digging in for a fight to the end and I’m happy to have someone like a judge in court deciding as they have no vested interest to bluer impartiality unlike a scumbag lowlife heartless insurance company like RAC. They should stick to breakdown service where they do a good job and leave strong arm standover tactics to the underworld
