CarFax didn't work because the dealer I went to lied about repair history of my vehicle. CarFax is good if the dealer is truthful and the dealer I purchased the vehicle from was lying scum. In my case they rebuilt the engine and rolled back the odometer and I was able to prove it. When I confronted the dealer, and it's a major dealer in Massachusetts, they said they adjust CarFax information all the time. That leads me to believe that CarFax is very unreliable and subject to the whims of whatever the dealer wants it read.

Actually, CarFax helped SELL my car. In a used car market saturated with cars with anonymous owner and repair history. I was able to show potential buyers my car was only owned by me and regularly serviced by the manufacturer's dealer. This placed a potential buyer into a level of confidence he couldn't get from the "other guy's" offerings and the potential buyer turned buyer drove off in his new (used) vehicle confident I was a straight forward seller and he got what he was looking for. A clean car with a clean record. Thanks CarFax!

Great for seeing if a car has had otherwise undisclosed problems in its history.

I found a great deal on a 2013 Subaru WRX with only 5900 miles and had to get the carfax to make sure it wasnt too good to be true. Thankfully carfax revealed that everything the owner said was true and it gave me the confidence to purchase the vehicle. Thanks carfax!

I was looking for a vehicle so my daughter could get to and from school. There were three vehicles to choose from and so I went to each CARFAX report and found this particular 2002 JEEP Liberty as our choice. If it was NOT for CARFAX, I would have NOT found such an AWESOME vehicle that will be dependable for my college bound daughter. Even after picking via the CARFAX report, we were able to test drive it and it drove like a new vehicle that supported the information on CARFAX!! Thank you CARFAX for being there to help us out in our decision to purchase her 2002 JEEP Liberty!!

I drove 2 hours to buy a car that was supposed to have a clear title with no accidents. Car looked like it had been painted. So before I even test drove the car I ran the carfax on it. It showed a flood title. So glad for carfax.

Was about to purchase an awesome looking 2008 mustang gt with a custom body kit and low miles, but thanks to car fax I learned the only reason it had a body kit was because it was in a front end collision.

After buying a 2003 Sebring convertible on Craigslist listed in excellent shape, I had a repair bill of $980.00 the seller refused any compensation, a week later more problems. I run a CARFAX and found the car was a SALVAGE VEHICLE, AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. I will NEVER buy another user car with out checking CARFAX first.

Carfax report gives the information that has been reported by shops, especially in Mass where mandatory reporting for all shops is required. However, since, like myself, many times a owner will service his own vehicle, etc. it wont be on the records. So as far as the odometer, insurance reported accidents, etc. Carfax is a reliable source of information to help in deciding on purchasing a car. The next evolution of Carfax might be to include car specific maintenance or known issues as part of the report. For example, the 2006 jetat tdi 1.9l DSG auto 186K that I purchased, did not have a flywheel rattle that would indicate need to replacement. After I purchased the car, the same day, I found a loud rattle, metal banging sound which indicates a urgency to replace the flywheel. While Carfax cannot predict flywheel replacement, my research has found that at the mileage I bought the mileage would warrant a flywheel inspection simply because of mileage. Even though I asked the seller about the flywheel, he gave me inaccurate information such as flywheels are noisy (this might apply to Single Mass Flywheel, manuals which do not dampen the engines vibrations as much as the Dual Mass Flywheel which the DSG has), but do not worry about it if it happens to you. These little details in the negotiations would go a long way to helping the purchasing with certain years, makes and models to alert them to do research for this possibility and ask for a better selling price. I would have asked for a lower price, knowing that I would have to replace the flywheel soon verse "its no big deal, all flywheels are noisey" So the Jetta I purchased two months ago is in shop for the flywheel to be replaced. Fortunately, because the DSG auto uses a wet clutch, the clutch should outlive the flywheel. Stuff like that would really make Carfax standout as the go to place for records and search. The only places to find out known problems and solutions to repairs is to search specific car make/model forums. Even a website like Edmunds which gives an expert review, user reviews an a used car estimate of value. Having this information published would help buyers since sellers in order to sell their cars with know problems would need to adjust their price. Just because a car does not have a problem, specific parts only last so long. Even asking when the last timing belt change on certain cars, for me, is valid since it is usually $1,000 and that is a consideration in the price of post-purchase investment (tires, oil, filter, water pump, etc.) These are my reflections. Also, Mass does have a lemon law which requires the car to be able to pass inspection at time of purchase which this car would not because the tires were borderline, the windshield recently cracked, DTC light airbag sensor -although easy to replace- any DTC for car safety devices need be replace before inspection. The process as I found out later is: purchase, register car, inspect car - fail inspection buyer is entitled to full refund - provide links to different states Lemon law webpages. Things like this would add so much to helping the buyer. Carfax began as a Title, odometer and accident/salvage checker. So to progress to expanding your car centric information ecosystem to include more and certain relevant information would be great. Even having a sorter where by, some is looking for a certain car say for example in my case a tall person car. Jetta, new style 2006 not 2005-previous would be great; then if I am primary purpose is driving myself done, if I want to travel with adults in the backseat as a tall person, the driver backseat is useless. Stuff like that is great. 2005 Honda Odyssey I fit, most other mini vans of certain years, makes and models I do not fit. Leg fitment by inseam and even clearance under steering wheel. Or those tall person's who have tall torso need more headroom, ets. Serious help. Well, those are my thoughts.

My bride fell in love with her dream car in 2003 when GM introduced the Cadillac XLR. Though I love her with all my heart, the price tag was out of reach. This year, the romance was rekindled as Karen started to search for XLRs that she could make her own. Well...she's not as sneaky as I am. I found her dream car in Alabama (we live in Wisconsin). The Car Fax gave me the confidence to make an offer and bring her dream car home. Needless to say, she was delighted and the car continues to light her eyes up every day! Thanks Car Fox!

Carfax is the De-facto before buying a used car. It has saved me from buying a lot of cars which were good looking but didn't have so good history. It is completely worth it. Car buying is a major decision and buying a carfax account is small but significant fist step towards it. You can be 60-70% sure of buying a car based on its carfax report, rest 30-40% depends on you checking the car physically. So you see how carfax has a Lion's share in decision making!! I am glad I bought a carfax account before buying my car. - Vaibhav

Carfax is for more than buying a used car. When my BMW needed a new engine I used Carfax to confirm the mileage and service history for a salvage motor sourced from eBay. Now my Bimmer with 87,000 miles has a new engine with 18,000 miles on it.

I live a fair distance from the dealership and so I got as much information over the phone as I could, then went to Carfax.com. I live in the States but found that the car originated in Canada. Oh no! I thought the dashboard would show kilometers first, miles second. Gas in liters rather than gallons. So called the dealership again and they reassured me that it was a US dashboard. It was nice to have the history of the car from Carfax.com. I purchased it.

Been looking for cars that have been in California their whole lives. CarFax is really nice to have every state they are registered in along with the collision and service reports. I feel like I'm shopping with my eyes closed without it! Paul

$55 should buy more than 2 months service. I think I only received 2 or 3 reports for that money. I'm still looking for a vehicle, but I'm not spending another $55 for a couple more reports. The reports were helpful though.

I was looking to purchase a 2002 Avalanche for $5000 that had 129k miles on it . It was a great price for the truck and it drove out nice but something seemed strange .I wrote down the vin and I told the seller I would get back with him the next morning . I came home and purchased CAR FAX and am so very glad I did , this 129k miles had been 142k miles back in 2008 , not good . I didn't know you could turn back a digital odometer . I learned that it could be done but that wasn't the case . The entire dashboard with the cluster had been changed . CAR FAX saved me $5000 . After that if I could not get the information from the seller to run a CAR FAX I didn't even go look at it .THANKS CARFAX !!!

It's great having a "one-stop" database where you can view vehicle history as a shopper and even track your own vehicle maintenance as an owner.

I looked at a lot of cars and this helped me stay away from cars that looked like eye candy, that had problems. I just couldn't believe how they would make a car sound so good to suck you into a trap. Also on most of the cars, the information was plentiful and some a mystery. I love the fact I could look by tag# or VIN. That was very helpful.
