I don't know where to find all the scales that Peter talks about. Are they written down somewhere?

Hi Lynn, First off, welcome to Open Studio! You may be referring to the etudes the Peter demonstrates in the Essential Jazz Piano Etudes course that you can find on your course dashboard here--> https://www.openstudiojazz.com/view/courses/27-essential-jazz-piano-etudes They are written out in a downloadable workbook. If that's not what you meant, shoot our team an email at support@openstudiojazz.com Best, Dan Martin Co-founder, Open Studio

I'm a huge fan! Adam teaches so clearly and with such enthusiasm. And the supplemental pdf workbooks are the perfect complement. Truly feel I am getting great value for my money. Thank you!

The content is fantastic, as a classical pianist, it was easy to bridge my knowledge and be as efficient as possible in learning jazz. Adam is also a great teacher. The only problems I've found is that soundslice doesn't really harmonize too well with keyboard shortcuts. Being able to skip 10 seconds forward or back would be such a game changer!! Also the course overview is not really that personalized. How about a quick little quiz that defines your level right after first logging into open Studio, so that appropriate content is recommended. I spent a lot of time on the elements of jazz course when I really didn't need to...

Hi Tim, Thanks for taking the time to review. Soundslice does have some keyboard shortcuts that you can see here (https://www.soundslice.com/help/en/player/tips/1/keyboard-shortcuts/), but I'll pass your suggestion along to them for a quick rewind/ff. I can see how that would be useful. We are in the process of developing a brand new site and we will definitely be implementing your quiz idea to help people get started on the right path. Happy practicing! Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio

My overall experience has been very good. Most courses are pre recorded. It would be great if there was more interaction or acknowledgment from the teachers of each course. Otherwise, highly recommended. I’m a full time musician/ educator myself. Open Studio has more than enough content to help me work on my weak areas - SOLO jazz piano. I’m now enjoying my sixth year as a member of O.S (recently upgraded to O.S PRO) My confidence for solo piano is now getting me more work. Thank you, Peter Martin, Adam Maness, and all the other amazing educators onboard.

I'm very satisfied with the content of Open Studio. As a long-term jazz piano learner, I would always struggle with how I learn to improvise and voicings. Especially, guided practice session helps me to learn effectively and never get bored. It's been only a week since I join, and I am sure I can continue to learn jazz on Open Studio. Thank you .

The best thing for me is the courses are available to use whenever my schedule allows. Plenty of good material waiting to be accessed whenever you're ready. Go at your own pace. Work on whatever you need the most help on.

I love the voicings and the colours produced in the teachings of the Open Studio. The one recommendation that I would make that would help me is to see a score when demonstrations are being presented, e.g., if the piece transitions into one of the modes then it would be useful to see the notes and the name of the mode. I am not yet able to grasp each of the modes quickly and by ear, albeit I suspect that your approach is designed to develop the student's ear rather than using a score. However, that might take me some time to achieve.

absolutely the best course i could imagine. I recommend to everyone, beginner or advanced musicians. Adam is a phenomenon, especially for the clarity and simplicity with which he teaches. I tried several other solutions, but Open Studio is really complete and professional. Absolutely the best on the web.

Jazz Piano Method: I've personally studied with some of the best jazz pianists in the world over the years. Out of all of them, I recognize only one as having that "plus" element that Peter Martin certainly has. Your "typical" jazz piano master has a complete control over the repertoire, an incredible ability to transpose, and a total mastery of the language. They will largely base their style on the imitation of Bud, or Barry, or Cedar, mostly playing in one style (for example with shells in the left hand) Peter is different..an amazing left hand and dozens of ways to approach piano solo in a tangible way that works and swings. The simplest example: for many pianists, playing half notes in the bass register would be deemed as "mechanical and non idiomatic". Peter proves stuff like that is not only possible, but incredibly functional and hip. He's a great teacher, he explains as best as he can how to get from point A to point B. With that being said.... The main problem is that the average student (if he has not gone through a serious education and/or through a series of real life traumatizing experiences) will not likely be able to properly assess his level. Not only will be the choice of what to study a problem, but also how to. Peter will show a concept on how to improvise and play an amazing tranche of a solo based on that, but the student will likely understand the concept and not sound that good, because he doesn't hear stuff like Peter does. The real benefit comes in copying Peter and then making your variations, your considerations, why not...your etudes. You can't expect to receive a formula "improvise with triads" and sound good, if you don't know how to really absorb the way of playing like that functionally. That takes time. And a single lesson can be material for months, if properly studied. Openstudio can then become a serious expense that won't really benefit the overwhelmed musician. They are email friendly and there is a possibility to be guided, although I strongly believe that only Peter would have the actual competence to really guide somebody. Personally, it took me years to learn how to guide myself through stuff like that. The comments section of the lessons is almost always empty and when somebody asks interesting follow up questions, they are not replied. The Facebook group is a desert. The best thing for a student would be to check his solo piano elements lessons, learning how to play tunes, then absorb some concepts on how to play on the various tunes Peter describes, all that with the guide of a teacher, if he/she is not ready yet. The best suggestion I can give is to offer a paying service that first filters the student's level (ex: send a tune played in time from start to finish) and then allows him/her to ask specific little questions to Peter and then receive a personal short video, even weeks later.

The content and instructors on Open Studio are fantastic – I especially love the guided practice sessions. However, navigating the website is clunky and feels very outdated. Finding specific courses is often confusing and requires either searching for the exact course name or setting it as a bookmark in my browser. Having an option to "save" a course as a favorite would be a great way to quickly pull up a lesson that you are working on.

Just beginning with the base piano course. Every session is well done, gives motivation to follow the exercise. The integrated music score allow to rapidly find the spot you need in the video. The study manual is also well done. Simply great.

I have purchased other online jazz study materials, some of them quite good, but Open Studio is in a class by itself. Guided Practice sessions make it unambiguous what needs to be done. I have always struggled with figuring out what to practice and how to practice, but Open Studio has solved that problem.
