Well for a start I wouldn't have even given 1 star, I had to just to trigger the response box! All I needed was a jump start from home so that I could go and buy a new battery. It took 1&1/2 hrs on the phone from 2pm yesterday, being passed through 6 different departments to eventually establish that RAC had had troubles with the direct debit system and my policy had subsequently expired. I had to reinstate the policy & pay a £25 surcharge because I called them out on the first day of a new policy, and was then told there was a 4 hour wait, by which time Halfords would be closed. So the guy on the phone said he'd booked a call out for 9am this morning, by 11.20 I still hadn't heard anything so I called them again only to be told that there was no callout booked! So they booked another callout, told me it would be at least an hour and a half, and 10 minutes later I got a call from the mechanic who was sitting outside my old address 250 miles away. I've always said that I've never had a problem with RAC breakdown, but that would be because I've never had to call them out. I just thank god that I wasn't stuck in the middle of nowhere because I wouldn't have known that my policy no longer existed until then. In the end my elderly father has been to jump start my car, but when I tried to cancel the callout I was told I couldn't and I had to speak to a rep. I was put through, gave my membership number and then the call was cut off. That's it, I'm done. I've called the renewal team and asked for my £25 surcharge back, and ditched them.

On the 22nd December I called the RAC after my tyre blew on the motorway At 7pm and was advised a 2-3 hour wait. I started receiving there automated texts advising 45 mins. Then 7 hours later I spoke to someone on the phone and was advised no one would be there until 9am. I should have left them then but didn’t and assumed it was a bad day for them. Today I called at 8pm as my headlights won’t work and was also advised 2-3 hours. It’s now midnight and I’m still sat in Sainsbury’s car park with my 3 year old. Unacceptable is an understatement. Also the texts are exactly the same fully automated like they know it’s going to be longer and if they where honest I would have had someone pick my daughter up for me.

Car wouldn't start this morning (10:35) nothing wrong with the battery as it's new. At 10:45 I contacted the RAC and after listening to an infuriating amount of recorded babble I was finally connected to he call centre. I was told because I was at home the call out wait would be 2-3 hours. Well it's now 4 hours later and I've just had a call saying that assistance probably wouldn't be arriving until 10pm!!! The call advisor then went in to say that seeing as I'm at home and not going anywhere would I mind waiting until tomorrow!!! YES, I do mind! The reason I'm not going anywhere is because my car won't start and being at home shouldn't come into it as I pay for home start!! Nothing but text messages with apologies and excuses and still waiting for help to arrive!!! Well after this experience I'll definitely be cancelling my policy. Appalling service. Never again!!!

I have had 2 issues with the RAC and really should have learnt after the first one. The first problem was when my car broke down on the M25 and I managed to get it into Clacket Lane services where they reappeared my told me they would be with me soon then went silent then finally picked me up the following afternoon having left me stranded for over 20 hours. I should have learnt my lesson and changed company but stupidly I let it renew thinking I couldn’t have problems with them twice. Well now I have a new issue they had previously replaced a battery on my car with one of their own that has a 5 year warranty expecting that if the battery failed they would replace it at any time in those 5 years assuming I met the conditions outlined on their website (see attached picture) there was no fault with the car I have driven more than the minimum amount of miles they state and there had been no accidental damage so everything they lost on their website was fine and as far as I was concerned when the mechanic from the RAC said the battery was faulty and it wasn’t the car I expected a replacement however he stated that because my battery had gone flat it voided the warranty despite the reason the battery had gone flat being that the battery was faulty. I complained and they have now emailed me a different set of conditions (also attached as a screenshot) that says if I let the battery voltage drop below 11.9v the warranty is void despite the reason the battery dropping to that level being that there is a fault with the battery they sold me basically making the battery warranty worthless. They charge substantially more for the batteries than other places but I thought it was Roth it for the 5 year warranty on the product not realising that the 5 year warranty had terms and conditions not explained at the point of purchase that mean the warranty is worthless. It is a complete scam to con you into buying batteries with a warranty they have no intention to honour. That coupled with the horrendous amount of time it now takes them to come to a callout makes them a terrible company to have a policy with you should avoid at all costs.

Yes they took 4 days to recover my car & wouldn't refund me because I'd used their service!

The RAC took 72 hours to recover my car and caravan. Initially they sid 40 min, then 3 texts said the same. 2 hours later, the RAC said help was due immediately. Once I insisted on speaking to a supervisor, he admitted having no service booked for us & arranged a taxi home. It the took 3 more days to get my car & caravan home. Avoid the RAC at all costs, the lie about their ability to provide a service. When I wanted to cancel my contract after a 4 day wait, guess what! Because I had used the service! I couldn't cancel. Please use a anyone but the RAC

I called for breakdown assistance to be told that I was not covered on my policy, and that it would cost me if they called out,so I got help from my local garage at a cost to me,who fixed the problem,I later phoned the rac to be told by another operator that I was covered and they would send a truck out to help me,well it was too late then,my wife and myself are severely disabled and totally rely on the rac to deliver me what I paid for, this is not the first time I have been let down by the rac, many years ago they were very good, but it seems to me they only want your subscription, and then ???my advise look elsewhere if you need car breakdown cover

Waited over three hours for RAC to turn up one evening after being told many times that they were on the way and will be with me shortly. I eventually sorted the problem myself around midnight after you tubing some tips. A few weeks later I had to call RAC again for help as my van wheel had sunk into some thick mud. I wasn’t made aware there would be a charge for this call out when booking the recovery or by the recovery man himself. It cost well over £100 for that call out so I called RAC to cancel my membership once it finishes in two months time. I received an email back from them straight away saying my membership has been terminated straight away and I won’t be due any money back as I’d received a call out in the past year. Absolute joke of a company, terrible customer service. Would NEVER EVER use RAC again!!!!

After having the car serviced at the dealers a couple of weeks ago and after driving home from work the fuel feed line blew off. RAC were called and identified a school boy error, line not fixed completely, hence blow off. Young man called Shaun quickly fixed the problem. He also gave some great advice . Would recommend 👌 RAC to any one top guy Shaun.

Steering wheel locked on my Saab Estate 7th December. It took 35 minutes for the phone call to be answered and then told it could be 5 hours before help arrived. Sought help elsewhere. Won't be renewing membership. Green Flag it is.

Never ever take RAC breakdown cover. The advisor ( Juliet)told me to book a taxi by myself and go home as they cannot authorise a taxi voucher. So the options for me are , either wait 4 to 5 hours for recovery or go home by a taxi and pay for it !

Never used their funny breakdown recovery service. They decided to renew mu policy and I called 2 days later to cancel. They only refunded half of the amount and the person in the other side of the phone was extremely rude. Never thought they have such a bad customer service! Avoid as it is absolute useless!
