It was disappointing to find the lack of support and customer care when I contacted Hastings Direct SmartMiles and explained that I was having difficulty installing my black box. They refused to send an engineer unless I cancelled my policy and took out a new one with them, which is absolutely absurd. I would have rather paid the extra to insure my car with a company with better customer service.

Positives: price! As a new driver, I got a little C2 which was perfect but insurance was a nightmare - if it wasn't for Smart Miles I would've been looking at over ?2,500 which I could not afford. After a year it had halved which was pretty good but I decided not to reinsure due to moving to a city - so price was good (I paid yearly) Negatives: They charge ?90 to remove the black box. Know a mechanic? They hide it behind the dashboard so it's a reasonably big job for someone with no experience removing them. At least they don't want you to send it back. Also, I didn't want to reinsure and yet they still took the money, I rang and explained and they said they'll refund it and cancel the new policy. This was 16th May, I won't get my money back until 7th June. Also, if your score goes down it is pretty impossible to build it back up. When I first got my car for the first month only I drove at night to pick up my boyfriend from work. For the rest of the year it was maybe 3 times I went out at night driving, my time of day score was 10/100. The rest are the same, which is a problem if you are not 100% confident when you first start using your car! All in all, it was a cheaper insurance policy with little other choices, but there are definite areas they could improve on.

They DEFINITELY do not like you driving AT NIGHT. My grandson fitted the supplied black box that looks as though it is worth a few quid. He had driven with INGENIE for a year and got quarterly refunds on his black box record but on buying a newer car their insurance was too high so we VERY FOOLISHLY went with this COWBOY OUTFIT. After a week he had a poor score made worse because he dared to return from his girlfriends after 10pm a couple of times. Repeat this much more and you will have your insurance cancelled they said!! Worse treatment than a criminal with an electronic tag. Cancelled within 13 days of taking it out and was charged £210 for the black box!!! SCANDALOUS RIP OFF FIRM - AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

1 send me a review when I had seen some readings online as I do a small mileage and have not reached 60 and been able to use facility 2 explain what device on floor in car is and how it should sit

My son had a black box fitted last year with another insurance company. He almost got over 80% rating with them all the time. This year we changed his insurance to Hastings because we're with them. He's be with them for 35 days and is in his second warning because he is below 40%. He works away during the week and drives a work van. He only uses his car at the weekend and occasionally on an evening if he's worked locally. On average about 5 -10 journeys a week and he has only driven a couple of times after 10pm coming home no later than 10.20pm. But his time of driving is on zero. Also his acceleration and braking is really low about 6-15 scored. Although he says he never revs the car above 2 and he's never braked hard. Whatever he does he can't score higher. So tomorrow is d-day to see if it's gone back up but after a weekend of driving correctly, safely and before 10pm his score has only gone up by 2points 36 to 38. I wouldn't recommend going with Hastings.

So I've been insured by Hastings smart miles for a week now and so far everything has been good, customer service when I took the policy out and the booking of my black box installation. However today was the day my box was supposed to be fitted, I booked the 8-12 slot so I could carry on with the rest of my day, only to be sitting there an hour after 12 and the engineer still hasn't turned up. When I ring again the customer service was great and they transferred me through to the right people. When I was put through to the right person they had a look to see where the engineer had got to and proceeded to tell me that said engineer had rang in sick this morning so there was never an engineer on his way out to me. I had no phone call to say that my engineer had to cancel this morning and they didn't ring to say that there wasn't any spare engineers available to cover the original who rang in sick. I told them I'd he waiting since 8am and could have been waiting all day hadn't I rang them to find out what was happening. Considering I've only been with this provider 1 week I'm not happy so far with the service provided and I hope throughout the year they give a better service or they won't have a loyal customer for next year!
