I ordered Essential Jazz Piano Etudes even though I’m a sax/flute player. It is very challenging but not overwhelming. Playing in 12 keys away from the written page is good for me. It’s a work in progress and I’ll keep at it daily. Thanks

Buonasera. Saluti Antonio T.

There's so much to like about Open Studio, but most importantly the piano instructors are very enthusiastic and inspiring (in addition to being very talented). I follow the courses in addition to traditional piano lessons and so far it's worked out great. I don't know if I'd recommend it to complete beginners as their sole means of instruction, because it's still important to get personal feedback on small things (posture, touch, etc.). I also still recommend that aspiring jazz pianists look for opportunities to play with others, as there's only so much you can learn from an online community, but this by no means detracts from what Open Studio offers. The most important recommendation I have (hence the four stars) is that an app should be a no-brainer. The organisation of the courses via the website isn't always incredibly clear or easy to navigate and a decent iOS or Android app should make the experience even better.

I am not of an age that I can hope to reach the ability of Arthur Rubinstien, but I hope to play some piano by just understanding and knowing the chords. I just started the course, but the course seems to be doable for me as a beginner.

I love the video courses. I feel that the community could be more interactive. A forum where people could ask public questions or post recordings of practice sessions and receive feedback would be great. I'd also like to have more resources about technique. Some other platforms offer checklists that are very useful as a guide on what to study next. For example: 1. Sing the root notes of Oleo while listening to the recording 2. Play rootless voicings over the form 3. Transcribe 2 choruses of Sonny Rollins first solo over Oleo 4. Compose 2 licks over the first bars Or 1. Learn shell voicings 2. Learn root (LH) + guide tones (RH) 3. Learn rootless voicings 4. Learn Drop 2 voicings Etc. Maybe some of the courses are structured in a similar way, but having a literal written out path to follow would be very helpful. Sometimes the webpage doesn't detect I'm already logged in, and when I click on a course, the window showed is the one that says you can buy the course or join open studio to enjoy it. I really appreciate the production quality of the videos. Tbh, I do not feel that the platform you use to show sheet music alongside with the video is that useful, having a pdf with the sheet music would be enough. Changing the volume or returning to a particular point of the lesson is a little bit slow when using that player, so I usually use the simple player. I don't like that the courses have checklists with 30+ items, but in reality there are just 10 items that get repeated because there is an audio only version, a simple player version, etc. It ruins the feeling of "gamifying" the course because the checkmarks don't really reflect how many classes I've seen.

Hi, the lessons are great! I love them! It’s just that it’s kind of hard to navigate the course at first. Overall, great experience!

Both Peter and Adam are excellent explainers of this form of music. They have a unique way of conveying whatever topic they are covering. From time to time they will give us some real nuggets with free downloads. Open Jazz is truly a blessing.

Great lessons!! Great lesson structures, and most importantly, great teachers with a contagious enthusiasm!! Literally the only reason i gave 4 stars is because in the handbooks, sometimes possible fingerings would be helpful. And also the fact that the practice journal doesn’t ship to Germany, nor is there a purchasable PDF. Other than that, I’m definitely already seeing improvements in improvisation and other key things within less than a week!! Please keep going! Also, maybe you can at one point do an analysis of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Runnin’” (the 3 min version with a cool piano part!) would be awesome!

Not for everyone; intermediate or higher. It would take a lot of work to go through them all. This is why I am going to choose only four or five of them. Still worthed. For those that will not work with the melody played with the LH, you rather suggest the chord accompaniment for LH. In fact, since we rarely play the melody with LH, you should provide a LH accompaniment for all of them.

Great content, great teachers but I feel often like there is a gap in terms of time necessary to complete a lesson. The chunks are sometimes too big to digest and it can feel a bit overwhelming. Go toward a more "baby step" approach would make a great difference.

Great content, and the site/platform in general works very well! My only suggestion is Soundslice related: would be great if the position in the video per lesson is persisted across page reloads. Sometimes Safari on iPad forcefully reloads a page after I open it after a few days, and the position in the video is lost. I also haven't found a way to get full screen video only, I always see the sheet music score on the right; although I can at least drag the divider to make it small.

i'm going slower than what i'd like. (it's on me). overall the approach looks very 'sound' (pardon the pun). ear training is difficult for me. I feel like I always mess up - but i keep at it. I got an app "functional ear training" - the Alain Benbassat method to assist. I'm debating if I should purchase the guide book. I recently had a stroke and dexterity in my left hand is less than stellar.

The content is fantastic, as a classical pianist, it was easy to bridge my knowledge and be as efficient as possible in learning jazz. Adam is also a great teacher. The only problems I've found is that soundslice doesn't really harmonize too well with keyboard shortcuts. Being able to skip 10 seconds forward or back would be such a game changer!! Also the course overview is not really that personalized. How about a quick little quiz that defines your level right after first logging into open Studio, so that appropriate content is recommended. I spent a lot of time on the elements of jazz course when I really didn't need to...

Hi Tim, Thanks for taking the time to review. Soundslice does have some keyboard shortcuts that you can see here (https://www.soundslice.com/help/en/player/tips/1/keyboard-shortcuts/), but I'll pass your suggestion along to them for a quick rewind/ff. I can see how that would be useful. We are in the process of developing a brand new site and we will definitely be implementing your quiz idea to help people get started on the right path. Happy practicing! Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio
